A HEARTFELT tribute to Lewis Park- hurst '78 as the "father" of Norfolk, the model prison colony, was expressed by its inmates in an article appearing in a recent issue of their publication, The Colony, in honor of his 88th birthday.

"To him," the article stated, "more than any other person, belongs the credit for this modern institution; this place of hope and not despair, this place where men can live more nearly as men should live."

Since 1922 Mr. Parkhurst has been an active crusader for prison reform in Massachusetts. The Norfolk Colony, which he created and which he continues to benefit by gifts to the library and in other ways, is the admirable result of his efforts.

Mr. Parkhurst served 33 years, before his retirement in October, 1941, as a member of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees. His business career as a partner and treasurer of Ginn and Co. was supplemented by his service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a state representative and state senator.
