1944 Fund Growing
May 1944

DARTMOUTH'S 1944 ALUMNI FUND had passed the $100,000 mark on April 17 and had a solid start toward the goal of $250,000 which the Alumni Council has set for this year's campaign. The interim report from Fund headquarters on that date showed gifts of $107,265 from 4,378 contributors, which placed the 1944 Fund slightly ahead of last year's record-breaking results at the same stage. A somewhat earlier beginning this year and the strong appeal of President Hopkins' opening message are credited with giving the 1944 Fund this edge which class agents are now striving to maintain.

The campaign as a whole picked up momentum during the past month as the result of the annual dinner meetings of class agents in Chicago, Boston and New York. The turnouts at all three dinners, which featured President Hopkins as speaker, were enthusiastic and unexpectedly large. These class agents and others throughout the country who could not get to the annual dinners are now "carrying the ball" and will, as usual, be the prime movers until the campaign closes on June 30.

NEW CLASS AGENTS NAMED

Several additions to the class agents' ranks have been made during the past two months. John S. Black of New Britain, Conn., has taken over for 1933; Bobb Chaney of Minneapolis and George Hoke of Wayzata, Minn., jointly for 1935; Barry Sullivan of Washington, D. C., for 1936; and Homer C. Bogart, now in college, for 1944. Three, new editors for class newsletters have also assumed Fund duties recently; they are John W. Herpel of Dunellen, N. J., for the 1928 Campaigner, Donald W. Fraser of Geneseo, N. Y., for the 1935 Blinker, and Richard F. Babcock of Chicago for the 1940 Indian Drum.

In the annual Green Derby contests, conducted among classes of the same pe- riod, igoi leads the 1898-1907 group with aaB% of cash objective and 98% of con- tributors; 1917 leads the 1908-1917 group with 74% and 32%, respectively; 1918 leads the 1918-1926 group with 55% and 40%: 1933 leads the 1927-1935 group with 41% and 32%; and 1941 leads the 1936- '943 group with 114% and 50%.
