V-12 Quota Gut
August 1944

DARTMOUTH'S QUOTA OF trainees in the Navy V-12 Program will be reduced from 2,000 to 1,280, effective November 1, 1944, it has been learned by means of an official communication to President Hopkins from the Bureau of Naval Personnel. This represents a reduction of 36 per cent, as compared with an over-all cut of about 28 per cent, and bears out the expectation that the Dartmouth V-12 Unit, as the largest in the country, would take one of the heaviest cuts in student personnel.

Dartmouth's revised quota of 1,280 will include approximately 209 Marines on November 1, as compared with the present Marine enrollment of 184. The November figure will consist of both present trainees and Marines to be transferred from other colleges.

The Navy announced as long ago as May 12 that decreases in its officer candidate requirements would result in a reduction of the V-12 Program starting November 1. Revised quotas have been based on the number of trainees now on board, instructional and housing facilities, and other factors. The Navy's policy will be to use individual housing units to capacity, and several of the present Navy dormitories at Dartmouth will be closed at the end of this term.
