Men Cited for Heroism and Meritorious Achievement
CAPTAIN ROBERT V. YEUELL '39, AUS, was killed in action in Germany on November 20, 1944. Previously awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry he won the Silver Star posthumously. He crawled 300 yards under heavy enemy fire in an engagement in France, September 12, 1944, to a radio position where he called for screening smoke and artillery fire for hardpressed infantrymen. On the following day, from an exposed position, he directed artillery fire upon enemy positions. His actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
MAJOR WILLIAM C. CHAMBERLIN '38, USMCR, has won two Silver Stars for conspicuous gallantry at Saipan and the Marianas. He had previously won the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart at Tarawa.
CAPTAIN HOWARD S. ZAGOR '40, AUS, has won the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the ETO.
COLONEL WILLIAM S. HAYDEN '31, USAAF, has won the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement.
FIRST LIEUTENANT CHARLES W. BRADLEY '43, USAAF, Flight Engineer on a B-29, made many aerial flights over Japan on fire bombing missions and for meritorious achievement has won the Air Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster.
FIRST LIEUTENANT PETER C. MCBEAN '42, AUS, has won the Bronze Star Medal for heroic service in connection with military operations against the Germans on March 30, 1945.
MAJOR JAMES A. DONOVAN JR. '39, USMC, has won the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. (See May 1945 issue for Silver Star award.)
LIEUTENANT ELLIOT F. DRESSNER '42, AUS, 2 for gallantry in action in the crossing of the Rhine River on March 26, 1945, has been awarded the Silver Star Medal.
COLONEL NORMANDO A. COSTELLO '28, USA, commander of the 319 th Infantry of the 80th Division, was awarded the Silver Star by the President for gallantry in action during an attack .on Gela, Germany, April 14.
MAJOR PERKINS BASS '34, USAAF, has been decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in China.
LIEUTENANT RUSSELL H. BRITTON JR. '42, AUS, died for his country on February 9, 1945, in an attack on a German position. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart Medals posthumously.
LIEUTENANT WLLLIAM A. MASON JR. '39, USNR, now on duty in Philadelphia, has had a distinguished career in the Pacific war zone as a naval pilot. He won the Air Medal for destroying a Japanese tanker and two barges and inflicting damage on another tanker, despite a withering barrage of anti-aircraft fire. (See December 1944.) He received the Gold Star in lieu of a second Air Medal for landing his plane in a heavily fortified harbor and rescuing four survivors of an American plane that had crashed after being hit by Japanese anti-aircraft guns. He won the Distinguished Flying Cross for operational flight missions carried out between September 13, 1943, and December 30, 1943. "Throughout these operations outstanding courage and devotion to duty were displayed."
MAJOR NICHOLAS R. VOORHIS '27, AUS, with the Judge Advocate General's Department, for meritorious service in con- nection with military operations against the enemy in Germany from 27 March 1945 to 29 April 1945, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
FIRST LIEUTENANT JOHN B. HARMON '38, USAAF, serving as pilot in the ChinaBurma-India Theatre of Operations from February 1944 to January 1945 has received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with one star.
FIRST LIEUTENANT NAPOLEON L. DEMARA '41, USAAF, a veteran navigator with the Troop Carrier Command in the ETO, has had two years of combat duty and has won the Air Medal and five Oak Leaf Clusters. Lieutenant Demara participated in many operational missions, one of the most important of which was the dropping of paratroopers in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He served with the 61st Troop Carrier Group, attached consecutively to the 9th, 12 th, and 15th Air Forces. He is now at Ellington Field, Texas.
LIEUTENANT COLONEL ALLAN D. CATTER ALL 'SI, USAAF, has recently been appointed as team commander of the 9th Air Force Service Command in Germany.
The service team which Lieutenant Colonel Catterall commands serviced and maintained the first fighter-bombers to fly sorties from German soil. These 9th Air Force planes operate from a former Luftwaffe base recently captured from the enemy by the American army. His service team has been awarded the Meritorious Service Plaque.
THE Japanese' plane that bombed the USS Franklin dived to within 45 feet of the flight deck, according to LIEUTENANT JAMES A. VAUGHAN JR. '41, USNR, who was in charge of a forward battery when the first bomb struck the carrier.
Lieutenant Vaughan has received the Bronze Star Medal for his service during the Franklin attack.
He has taken part in the actions at Guam, the Bonins, Saipan, Palau, the Battle for Leyte Gulf and the strikes on Formosa, as well as the Aleutian attacks at Attu and Kiska. His home is in Minneapolis, Minn.
FIRST LIEUTENANT ROBERT HEATH '45, USAAF, a navigator on a B-24 flying with the 15th Air Force, has flown 22 missions and has been awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
FIRST LIEUTENANT ROME H. BROWN '42, USAAF, a P-51 Mustang pilot, has won the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight. He took part in 15 separate assaults on Nazi targets in southern Europe.
LIEUTENANT HAROLD GILSON PAYNE, '33, 1 USNR, was killed in action in the South Pacific on June 15, 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal with the following citation:
For meritorious achievement in aerial flight as Air Combat Intelligence Officer of a Carrier-Based Torpedo Squadron in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Caroline, Marshall and Bonin Islands, and at Hollandia, New Guinea, January 29 to June 15, 1944.
CAPTAIN JOHN V. PHELAN '28, an Intelligence Officer of the "Billy Mitchell" group, 20th Bomber Command, has been awarded the Air Medal as a result of his nine round trips over the Hump between India and China.
SECOND LIEUTENANT RICHARD ALAN ROCKER '33, AUS, won a commission in the field and also, for gallantry in action and for meritorious service, has been awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
FIRST LIEUTENANT ROBERT L. STEINER '45, USAAF, has won the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious service in navigating a B-17 on 35 combat missions over Germany.
LIEUTENANT (JG) E. SMEDLEY WARD JR. '43, USNR, for outstanding service and meritorious achievement in assisting in the rescue of survivors on the Franklin has been awarded a Letter of Commendation.
FIRST LIEUTENANT EARL F. FLOOD '45, USAAF, for meritorious service in the South West Pacific area wears the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with two battle stars, and the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with four battle stars.
FIRST LIEUTENANT RICHARD W. DEANE '42, USAAF, veteran combat navigator, won the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with two battle stars and the Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon with two battle stars.
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ROBERT M. SANDOE '46, USMCR, for meritorious service in aerial flight of more than 300 hours in the South Pacific area over enemy installations has received the Air Medal.
LIEUTENANT COLONEL RICHARD G. RUBY '36, USMCR, for exceptionally meritorious conduct at Iwo Jima has been awarded the Legion of Merit. (See April 1945 issue, for award of the Bronze Star.)
STAFF SERGEANT JAY L. MCMULLEN '44, AUS, "Army Hour" correspondent with the 6th Army Group, for meritorious service in connection with military operations in France and Germany has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
MAJOR HAROLD S. FARWELL '37, USAAF, for gallantry in action in combat aerial flight has been awarded the Silver Star Medal. Major Farwell has served 11 months in Italy and has been previously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters.
MAJOR GRANT HEALEY '34, AUS, for meritorious achievement at Tacloban, Leyte, Philippine Islands, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
MAJOR BARKER C. CARRICK '35, USAAF, for meritorious service in North Africa and Italy has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
FIRST LIEUTENANT JOHN J. MURPHY '44, USAAF, with 40 combat missions over a period of 19 months in the ETO, has been awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.
LIEUTENANT JOHN V. DELANDER '4l, USNR, who piloted a carrier-based Hellcat on 62 combat missions and shot down 3 Jap planes has been awarded the Navy Air Medal.
TECHNICAL SERGEANT JOHN A. RAND '38, AUS, who served with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.
LIEUTENANT ROGER V. SMITH '33, USNR, has been awarded a Letter of Commendation with ribbon for distinguishing himself by excellent service in the face of enemy attack in the South Pacific.
LIEUTENANT COLONEL JAMES S. WHEATON i '24, USAAF, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious conduct in the ETO.
TECHNICIAN 4 JUDD S. MULALLY '43, AUS, for meritorious service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
MAJOR WILLIAM O. LUCAS '30, USAAF, has added the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster to his previously awarded DFC.
CAPTAIN JOHN G. DOUKAS '37, USAAF, for meritorious service in the ETO has won the Bronze Star Medal.
CAPTAIN ROBERT D. BROWN '43, AUS, fighting with the Infantry, has received the Bronze Star Medal for "heroic achievement in battle," the Purple Heart, and the Legion of Merit for "exceptional meritorious service."
FIRST LIEUTENANT THOMAS J. DANES '42, AUS, for gallantry with the infantry in action against the Germans on April 15, 1945, has been awarded the Silver Star Medal. Lieutenant Danes trained as a paratrooper and he made the historic jump across the Rhine in March 1945 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on the battlefield.
COMMODORE PAUL J. HALLORAN '19, USN, for meritorious service has won a gold star in lieu of a second Legion of Merit. (See December 1944 issue.)
GOLONEL VICTOR L. JOHNSON '38, AUS, with the 25th Infantry Division on Luzon has been awarded the Air Medal for flying in Piper Cub planes over hazardous terrain to get tactical information for his division.
FIRST LIEUTENANT RICHARD D. SHAPIRO '40, AUS, has received the Silver Star Medal posthumously for gallantry in action against the Japanese on Leyte in the Philippines. His death occurred while repulsing a strong enemy counter-attack last December.
CHIEF WARRANT OFFICER RONALD A.WESTGATE '42, AUS, with the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service.
LIEUTENANT COMMANDER WINSTON J. ROWE '33, USNR, has received the Navy Commendation ribbon for outstanding service as flight surgeon attached to a carrier-based squadron in the Pacific.
SERGEANT ROBERT H. WINSTANLEY '46, AUS, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic action against the Germans on April 10, 1945.
MAJOR GENERAL WILLARD S. PAUL '16, AUS, of the 26th Yankee Division, was recently awarded the Russian War of Liberation and Red Banner Medals at his headquarters in Czechoslovakia.
FIRST LIEUTENANT F. W. SCHAEFER JR., '42, USAAF, stationed with the Bth Air Force in the ETO, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and he has four battle stars on his ETO ribbon.
LIEUTENANT FREDERICK S. MATTHEWS '42, USNR, has had a distinguished war record. Flying in the Pacific for a year he won the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with cluster.
LIEUTENANT WILLIAM H. STEIN '43, USAAF, pilot of a B-17, and recently a prisoner of war, has been awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
CAPTAIN KEVIN J. FAY '39, AUS, with Patton s Third Army in Germany, won the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action on May 20, 1945. He voluntarily advanced half a mile into enemy territory and under heavy fire evacuated 12 seriously wounded men.
CAPTAIN CHARLES M. TOWNSEND '27, USAAF, won a Silver Star Medal and the Purple Heart for his heroic conduct in the invasion of Leyte.
SECOND LIEUTENANT ROBERT W. ST. LOUIS '31, killed in action in Northern Italy last April was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his gallantry in repelling an enemy counter-attack.
STAFF SERGEANT BERT W. ANGER '43, AUS, has been awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Normandy, and from General de Gaulle he received the Croix de Guerre. He also wears the Good Conduct Medal, and has three battle stars on his campaign ribbon.
LIEUTENANT JAMES R. BODINE '44, USAAF, has won the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. (See November 1944 issue.)
CORPORAL JOHN L. NELSON '41, AUS, has been in the invasion of Africa, the Tunisian campaign, the Sicily and Salerno invasions, and was at Cassino and Rome. He has been awarded the Croix de Guerre with Gold Star.
FIRST LIEUTENANT CHARLES L. YOUMANS JR. '45, USAAF, pilot of a B-26 and credited with 35 missions, has been awarded the Croix de Guerre, the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Presidential Unit citation, and has 3 battle stars on his ETO ribbon.
LIEUTENANT (JG) WALTER A. JACOBS '42, USNR, was killed in action flying from a carrier in the Iwo Jima sector on February 21, 1945. He had been awarded the Navy Air Medal and the Purple Heart and has been recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross.
THE NAVY AIR MEDAL has been awarded to Lt. John V. Delander '4l, pilot of a carrier-based Hellcat and former captain of the Big Green crew.
