The class notes editor of the Class of 1908, William D Knight, at the opening of the current football season started on his 34th year as one of the Big Ten officials who work in games played by Western Conference Elevens. Football officiating is a hobby of Mr. Knight's and he is rated one of the game's best. He is now dean in point of service of the Big Ten group.
Another Dartmouth alumnus, Horace G. "Cap" Hedges '11, is one of Mr. Knight's colleagues in the group and second to him in the number of years he has been with them.
An expert knowledge of the rules of the game and how to apply as well as physical fitness are required of the conference officials most of whom like Mr. Knight, who is a noted lawyer, and Mr. Hedges, who is vice president of a real estate organization, are drawn from the professions and business. It is said that the Big Ten officials "make an invaluable contribution to the quality of play for which Western Conference football is nationally known."
At Dartmouth Mr. Knight played quarterback on the Big Green team and Mr. Hedges played on the varsity basketball team.
