Unique Loyalty
November 1945

For almost a century the tombstone shown above has been testifying to the Rev. Zephaniah Swift's pride and pleasure in being an alumnus of Dartmouth College, class of 1792.

The Reverend Swift's unique expression of loyalty to the College was discovered recently in the cemetery at Derby, Conn., by another graduate of Dartmouth, George R. Adams '09. Mr. Adams, in examining the old monuments, was quick to note the "Graduated at Dart. College 1792" incised as the third and fourth lines under the Reverend Swift's name and place and date of birth. The inscription, as may be seen in the reproduction above, is still sharp and clear.

Mr. Adams also sent in a likeness of the Reverend Swift from an old picture and a photograph of the First Congregational Church in Derby where he was pastor and which is also mentioned in the epitaph on his gravestone. The church, in July, celebrated its 125 th anniversary.

THE RESTING PLACE IS DISCOVERED of a Dartmouth graduate of 1792 by another Dartmouth alumnus, George R. Adams '09.
