Edward Connery Lathem '51, Dean of Libraries, ed. 76 United Statesiana. Association of Research Libraries, 1976. 156 pp. paper, $5.75; hard cover, $7.50. From 200 years of American history Lathem has chosen 76 influential scholarly works "concerned with various aspects of the life and culture, history and heritage of the United States." The selections include seminal works in such fields as American history, sports, publishing, bibliography, the Supreme Court, and social history; they range in time from Jeremy Belknap's landmark History of NewHampshire (1784-92) to Bruce Catton's Michigan: A Bicentennial History (1976). The commentators are equally representative: among others. Senator Edward W. Brooke, Art Buchwald, Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, Gene Tunney, Terrence Cardinal Cooke, and Gerald R. Ford. Lathem's editorial discernment combines with the printing and book-design talents of Roderick D. Stinehour '50 to produce a handsome tribute to American scholarship's first 200 years.

G. Z. (Borne) Patten '52. You, Too, Can StopDrinking. Exposition Press, 1977. 256 pp. $8.50. The title tells most of the story. The author, a recovered alcoholic, presents 20 lectures on the causes and cures of alcoholism. Confessional in tone, the lectures persuasively argue the fundamental assumptions of AA: that drunkenness is not a sin or a moral weakness, but a sickness; that it can be controlled by self-discipline, mutual assistance among alcoholics, and a refurbished sense of self-worth. The prescribed cure is based upon the famous "Twelve Steps" of AA, from Step 1, "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable"; to Step 12, "Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs." (See also the adjacent essay on "Dr. Bob," co-founder of AA.)
