Navy Glass Numerals
December 1945

FOLLOWING THE PRINCIPLE of establishing a regular class affiliation for all students who are candidates for the degree, NROTC and Marine undergraduates were last month enrolled in Dartmouth classes according to the year in which they are scheduled to receive the Dartmouth degree. The action gives these students full association with the war classes of '46, '47, and '48 with which they will graduate. Navy students who are not candidates for degrees are eligible for membership in the Dartmouth Navy Alumni Association. This is true of some 300 V-12 students on the campus and of Navy alumni who join the DNAA and who do not return as civilian candidates for the degree.

Another procedure of importance in alumni affairs was announced by the College last month in respect to alumni class affiliations of veterans returning to College. Men returning who have previously matriculated at Dartmouth are listed with their original classes. For example, John Doe '44 spent four semesters with his class before leaving for war service. Now, after three years, he returns to complete four semesters for the degree. Although such a man may later prefer permanent affiliation with the class now in College with which he will graduate, he continues to be included in the class of '44 until and unless he decides otherwise. In any event, in advance of graduation all returned veterans will be asked whether they wish to remain in their original classes or transfer permanently to a present undergraduate class. Official College records and class lists will be established according to the decision made by each man.

The College Directory for the winter term will list class numerals for all NROTC, Marine, and civilian students according to the above plan, and members of the V-12 Unit will be so indicated in the Directory. In addition, for purposes of identification of military students, class numerals for these men will be followed by the letter N or MC to indicate Navy or Marine Corps service status. An additional helpful feature of the Directory will be a listing of number of terms completed as of November 1 for all students. An example of the listing is: John Jones '46N (6)— indicating NROTC student with six terms completed, two remaining for graduation in June 1946.

Widespread use of class numerals in College publications, athletic programs, etc., will become effective upon publication of the Directory later this month.

NROTC and Marine students will become active in undergraduate class affairs while in Hanover and upon graduation they will participate in alumni activities of their classes in all respects. The strong Dartmouth Navy Alumni Association, of which the membership is now nearly 1200, is established as a permanent unit within the alumni body identical to a class or regional alumni club, or the alumni groups of the Associated Schools—Tuck, Medical, and Thayer. The DNAA will continue to provide an Association throughout life for all V-12 students who attend Dartmouth but who have not been candidates for the degree.
