Winter Sports Weekend Climax of Ski Season
THE SECOND WINTER SPORTS WEEKEND, the DOC's wartime version of what in normal years would have been the 35th annual Winter Carnival, burst upon the Hanover scene on Feb. 3 and 4. Though many of the elaborate features of the nationally famous pre-war festival were eliminated, the Weekend with its gala program and traditional snow sculptures, with new Navy and Marine touches added, was a suitable tribute to the winter season. A large crowd in holiday mood enjoyed the weather and the snow which were perfect.
Outdoor events were the features of the occasion but the full schedule also included the Fifth Quarterdeck Hop, at which 600 couples danced to the music of Tony Pastor and his Orchestra; a concert by the Glee Club, which preluded the Players' outstanding production of the comedy, "The Man Who Came to Dinner"; and the Holy Cross-Dartmouth basketball game. All of which satisfactorily took care of the evening hours for the students and their dates.
In the main attraction of the Weekend the ski meet the Big Green was unable to retain possession of the Carnival Cup, which Dartmouth recaptured last season after it had been two years in the hands of the University of New Hampshire. This year it was a fine Middlebury College team, minus the services of their ace, Dick Gaylord, that came through to nose out Dartmouth by a 278.2 to 274.4 score. However, the Indians had also lost their star, Colin Stewart '48, who led the team at the early season Lake Placid intercollegiate meet, for the entire competition and Francis (Sonny) Drury '48 in the two slaloms.
SLALOM OPENS MEET
A giant slalom on nearby Balch Hill opened the meet Saturday morning, in place of the usual downhill event. Howie Hewitt, Dartmouth's captain, came through with the winning time, but Middlebury, led by Tom Cremer, placed enough men in the top positions to take the event handily. Dartmouth pulled up fourth behind Williams, Harvard and the winning Panthers.
On Saturday afternoon, a large crowd was at the Big Jump to watch the crack intercollegiate jumpers continue the competition for the Carnival Cup. Sneath of Williams was high scorer with 200.2 points but the Green's "Sonny" Drury made the longest leap and finished second. Dartmouth won the event and pushed itself back into a leading position in the fight for the cup. The meet was still wide open as Sunday's final slalom arrived.
The regular slalom began on Oak Hill with Middlebury leading the Indians by 3.4 points. Howie Hewitt scored another victory and Vern Lamb's fast time put him in fifth place but at the close of the race Dartmouth was fourth in team scoring, Middlebury third, and a surprising Harvard squad first.
SKIERS AWARDED LETTERS
In recognition of service on the ski team, the following men were awarded letters at a recent meeting of the Winter Sports Council: Capt. Howard Hewitt '46, Colin Stewart '48, Francis Drury '48, Vern Lamb USNR and Gilbert Warren USNR, Managerial letters were presented to Willard Wood USNR, Robert Willcox '45, and Malcolm Schetky USNR.
Carnival "snowflakes" for Winter Sports Meet competition were awarded Hewitt, Drury, Lamb, Warren, Dave Miller '48, and Bill Jones '48.
CABIN AND TRAIL OFFICERS
Despite the fact that most of the Navy and Marine Unit seems scheduled to remain at Hanover for at least the next term, the board of Cabin and Trail has elected new officers. The new chairman is lan Macartney '48 and his brother, Hal Macartney '46, takes over as secretary. Under this fraternal leadership, C&T should carry on into the spring season at top speed.
Farewell to Hanque Parker '46 USMCR, former C&T chairman. Nice going and good luck!
