DARTMOUTH MEN the world around were represented at the Feb. 15 launching of the SS Dartmouth Victory at the Oregon Shipbuilding Corp., Portland, Ore., by John A. Laing '05, president of the Dartmouth Association of Oregon, and nearly 25 fellow members of the association and Dartmouth men from nearby cities with their families.
Mr. Laing opened the ceremony of the christening of the ship with a brief word about the College and presented a message from President Hopkins expressing the keen interest of Dartmouth in the ship and the College's and alumni's best wishes for successful voyages.
The ship was christened by Mrs. Hugo Hoyle, wife of an assembly leader on the graveyard shift at the yard, whose crew ranked highest in bond purchases on the Sixth War Loan.
The Dartmouth group present at the launching included: John A. Laing '05, Chester M. Lawrence '05, Leigh S. Martin '06, Louis C. Langell '10, William H. Harlow '12, Reginald C. Brummer '19, Frederick M. Sercombe '21, Ronald J. Honeyman '25, Henry D. Leffingwell '25, Kenneth M. Montgomery '25, H. Dudley Sercombe '27, Samuel H. Martin '27, Baxter F. Ball '31, Dr. William S. Conklin '31, Carl E. Hopkins '33, Lt. Bruno M. Saia '34 USNR, Ronald C. Honeyman '49, and Warren Povey '49, all of whom were from Portland or vicinity.
Also present were: Dr. Walter C. Woodward '99, Samuel L. Barnes '07, Judge James W. Hodson '39, all from Seattle; Chauncey B. Baxter '10, from Tacoma; and John W. Ash '99 from Corvallis.
A library of books and reading matter which includes volumes relating to Dartmouth have been presented to the ship with the good wishes of the Dartmouth men of Oregon.
