DARTMOUTH'S SPRING TERM got under way on March 5 with a total student enrollment of 1,324, made up largely of the 990 men in the Navy V-12 Unit. Civilian students this term number 191, a sharp drop of 51 from last term despite the arrival of 49 new freshmen in the entering class of 1949.
Seven classes, 1943 through 1949, are now represented in College, with the civilian enrollment including 170 undergraduates, 17 medical students, three graduate students, and one unclassified student. The Navy V-12 Unit of 990 trainees is made up of 829 apprentice seamen and 161 marines. Thirty-five Navy medics and eight Army medics bring Dartmouth's present service enrollment up to 1,033.
Because of the reduced number of V-12 trainees this term, Butterfield and Russell Sage have been closed as Navy dorms and chow is being served only in Thayer Hall instead of in both Thayer and College Halls. Civilians are still housed in Crosby, Wheeler and Richardson, and the Army and Navy medics continue in North Fayerweather.
