THE DARTMOUTH SPIRIT is being kept alive on this island, recently captured from the Japs, by two Marine first lieutenants, Robert L. Grant '4.3 and Frederick E. Kneip '36, who have declared the Headquarters Battalion of the Fifth Amphibious Corps headquarters of the Dartmouth Iwo Jima Club and have elected themselves officers.
The two have only a couple of pressing problems concerned with the new addition to the world-wide list of Dartmouth Clubs: i.e., increasing club membership and deciding which of them is president and which, vice president. Both lieutenants landed on the island while enemy artillery fire still raked the invasion beaches.
At Dartmouth Lieutenant Grant was production director of the college radio station, DBS, and president of Delta Upsilon and Lieutenant JfCneip was a member of the Dartmouth golf team, Casque and Gauntlet, and Psi Upsilon.
