Naval Degrees
June 1945

IN RECOGNITION of the fact that many of the Dartmouth V-12 trainees eligible for transfer to NROTC will have insufficient terms in which to meet both the Navy requirements and the College's normal requirements for the Bachelor's degree, the College, with faculty approval, has modified its degree requirements in their special cases. Upon faculty recommendation, the Board of Trustees has also voted the creation of a new Dartmouth degree—Bachelor of Naval Science—for the men who will be unable to meet even the modified degree requirements but who successfully complete the NROTC course.

The modified degree requirements call for the usual 120 semester hours' credit and an eight-term average of 1.8, but only eight related major courses instead of the normal ten will have to be passed and the regular language and social science requirements have been waived. The NROTC course must be successfully completed and a comprehensive examination in the major field but also be passed.

Certain irregular trainees now at Dartmouth who are unable to complete the modified academic major program because of insufficient terms may, with the approval of the Dean, register as candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Naval Science. This rather unique degree will be awarded to men who complete 120 semester hours of academic work, have a general average of 1.8, and successfully meet all the NROTC requirements without completing an academic major.
