George Tent writes from Hatchville that his daughter, Margaret, who with her family lives in Sweden, hasn't had a very hard time of it, but that letters do not get through very often, also that his daughter Sprig's husband has been in Europe over a year with the 9th Army, as a lieutenant colonel in the Antiaircraft forces. George hopes that he will be back soon.
Johnson writes from Ayer, where he has been thirty-six years, that on his insistence a year ago that plans be made for his successor, he was asked to secure an assistant who should work with him for a year and then take oyer. He says that probably this was the only time in the history of school superintendency that this policy was used. On June 30, when he retired, Johnson had served three years beyond the compulsory retirement age, under a law permitting it during the war. Johnson has served longer than any other district superintendent in Massachusetts. His district included Ayer, Boylston, West Boylston and Shirley, and later Boxborough. Several new school buildings, which I suppose should be called Shirley Temples, have been erected during his regime without expense to the towns. The great army cantonment at Ayer is in his district. Johnson's defy to the U. S. Army will always be remembered. Johnson's son graduated from Dartmouth in the class of 1925, and his grandson is planning to enter the class of '51.
Merrill Boyd's son Mitchell was married Sunday, May 27, at Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyoming, to Dora Lee Trevorrow. It is said: "By the Tre, the Por, the Pen, "You may know the Cornishmen."
So presumably Dora's family hails from Cornwall. Mitchell is a captain in the Army of the United States.
Ben Marshall was written up in the Haverhill Sunday Record's "Who's Who in Haverhill." Among Ben's enumerated activities was service as chaplain of the 192 nd Field Artillery, Connecticut National Guard, from 1917 to 1928. Ben told me many years ago that he had once thought of going into the army as a profession.
