"N. H. AIRMAN IN SPITFIRE BLASTS GERMAN BOMBER
London, Sept. 23 (AP)—A Spitfire piloted by a United States Army major, Harry R. Thyng, of Barnstead, N. H., damaged a Nazi JU-88 bomber in a twilight battle over the English channel last night, United States-headquarters announced today. 'The pilot saw me at the same time I discovered him,' Thyng said. 'He immediately jettisoned his bombs and made a vertical turn for France. He was about three miles away. I closed to within a thousand yards when his rear gunner started shoot- ing at me. I gave him a three-second burst. His right engine went out. I closed to about 50 yards and gave him a good long burst. His ship went into a series of very erratic maneuvers and started for the sea. Thyng's wife's name—Mary—and his son's name—James—are painted on his fighter plane."
The Manchester Union of the 25th, un- der the caption " 'Nothing surprises us any more,' flyer's wife, parents say" carried large pictures of Herby and Mrs. Herby, and Major Thyng's wife and 19 months' old child. Up to nine months the child had had 20 hours in the air. Herby's other son has been serving for two years as mili- tary science teacher at M.I.T.
John Meserve represented the class at Morrill's funeral. He writes concerning himself that he is the same family doctor with draft board examinations thrown in. He has a son in the Naval Hospital Serv- ice, C. Ph. M., somewhere in the Pacific; another, a ship-builder in Texas; a third, head of American Airlines operations at Buffalo and Niagara Falls; and a fourth, in the supply department of Allis Chal- mers Electric Manufacturing Cos., Nor- wood, Ohio, branch. All these sons have children. John subscribes to the idea that after hostilities are over, the leaders of the enemy hordes should be treated as crim- inals rather than mere prisoners of war.
A letter from Ikey Seelman says that the day he read in the papers of Morrill's death, Richard Mather Boardman, our classmate's son, was buried in New York City.
