Remember the fall of '42 when we entered Hanover as grassy-green freshmen and cringed when an upperclassman yelled " '46 out!" This past month certainly has brought back memories of those days, as the class of 1949 matriculated 230 strong. Green numerated freshman caps are quite prominent and the '48s led by Green Key are putting the lads through the paces. Along with the new freshmen, over 30 discharged .vets returned this term, including several '46s.
Among them are: "Chattanooga Jim" Kennedy, formerly an infantry sergeant who was wounded in Germany. Jim tells us that Joe Davenport is working his ear off for a chemical lab at home and is wondering why the hell he ever went to Tuck School. Ted Fajen is back in the fold after getting shot up in the ETO and is still trying to pass Spanish 1. Others back are Milt Fromson, who should make a bang-up quarterback for this year's football club; Bill Helmbold, discharged from the Army; George Hilton, after spending a year at the University of Chicago; Bob (Boge the 2nd) Bogart, your erstwhile class agent, who was also wounded in Europe and received a discharge; Ollie Nelson, after being out two semesters and working in Detroit; Johnny Rockwell, after receiving an honorable discharge from the Naval Air Corps at Pensacola.
Saw both Jack Eddy and Bill Nagle in town the other day. The former was just recently commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marines at Quantico and is now headed for the West Coast; Dave Chalmers got the gold bar along with Jack, and they should probably be together for a while. The latter has just finished his first year at Harvard in the Navy Medical Corps and told us that Jay Cunneen (after being discharged from the Army) was married to Caroline Zirnhilken of Philly a short while ago. Jay and the little woman have set up housekeeping and he is going to finish up at the University of Pennsylvania. Also seen recently in Hanover.... Lt. Clark Judge, also lately com- missioned in the Marines- at Quantico, and headed for the Pacific. We sat and talked over a few beers in the Coffee Shop and the former IC4A two-mile champ mentioned that most of the Dartmouth boys had done well at Quantico Pfc. Roy Jerman recently released from a German prison camp Irv Templeton who has gotten a medical discharge from the Navy and expects to return to school in November
Three more classmates received the sheepskin and left Hanover for good in June; they were Matt Gately (who had returned to school after being discharged from the Navy while at Cornell Middie School), Saul Nirenberg, and Hal MacCartney. Matt is now in Washington prior to entering the diplomatic service, while the other two said they were going to rest for a while after the rigors of Hanover. Hal and Mattboth graduated with "distinction," incidentally.
Bruce O'Brien and Cal Gurney have left Thayer School for Camp Endicott and ultimate commissions in the Seabees, while Dave Nassif and Gil McDowell have gone to Columbia Middie School. The first three received a B.S. degree last winter.
Notes:—Dick Pringle made Phi Beta Kappa several months after graduating. He incidentally played an exhibition golf match with "Jug" McSpaden several weeks ago before 3000 spectators and did quite well—shooting a 69. ... . Phil Goodspeed '49 informs us that brother Lt. Pete-of the AAF is married and expects a blessed event real soon. I'm not sure but" yours should be the first class baby, Pete—Congrats. -Ed "Aristotle" Kirkland has been released from a German prison camp. .... Ensign Sparky Bolton is now in the Atlantic as a communications officer Bob Arthurs is in his third year as a Navy Med student at the University of Buffalo Ensign Ed Woolman when last heard from was waiting for a ship in Newport Eddie Kuhn and Jack Dover were recently commissioned lieutenants in the Marine Corps at Quantico..... Dick Shambroom (Navy supply officer) has been to Guam and back since April Al Belinkie and Austie Chin are at Yale Law School John Condit who was reported missing in action has been liberated from a German prison camp Spent quite a bit of time during the June vacation at home with Dick Scharrer. At that time he was headed for Lincoln, Nebr., as a B-29 Radioman and wanted to hear from Paul Lux, "Zeus" Morse, Nick Vorys, and Larry Kidder. As far as we know Paul (Lt.) is in Tennessee in B-29 school and we've heard he is engaged to some southern queen. Nick is in the ETO with the AUS. Larry is at Annapolis and rooming with Jack Carroll '45, the former Green court star. In a recent letter from Ensign Dave Weld we found that Dick has been to England and back with the Navy. Dave quoted part of a letter from him so I will pass part of it on to you: "Finally finished my vacation at Great Lakes and then the Fleet Navy took complete charge. It wasn't a week after graduation that I was boarding a D.E. at Casco Bay, Portland, Maine. We were in Portland about two weeks, spending the nights there, and the days out about ten miles practicing gunnery. From there we went to New York to pick up ammunition and a convoy, which was composed of twenty-two ships, including an aircraft carrier and a troop transport. It took us all of ten days to reach Southampton, England, but unfortunately we only "stayed for several days. I was very much impressed with the cleanliness of both the harbor and the town, but the rest of it was nothing to write home about. Southampton was hit very hard and there were just a few pubs open where you could only get foul English beer. I couldn't even get a good meal—they had two things on the menu, fish chips and omelettes, and both were surprisingly expensive. I did have a good time though, and would like to go back after the war. Right now we are about ten hours out of New York and have a chance for a goodsized leave."
Jack "Surly" Underhill (Ensign) was at Ft. Pierce at Underwater Demolition School when Dave >vas in Miami and they saw quite a bit of one another. He also ran into Red Mandellat, Line School, in Hollywood, Fla., several times. Dave himself finished up further communications duty in Miami and has now reported to the Commander Service Force, Pacific Fleet. .... A letter from Bill Poole's mother tells us that he is now with the Third Army in Belgium on special reconstruction duty Bob Adamson is with the Army in the Philippines and from all reports is having a bang-up time Red Novascone has finished Navy Radar at Texas A & M and writes that he is about ready to start down that long trail with Jane.
Wah Hoo Wah Department:—First Lieutenant Bill Schuster is back home with the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, after completing thirty-five missions in the ETO. "Shipwreck" Kelley flew as lead bombardier for the 385th's formation (B-17s) in one of their last raids over Northwestern Germany during the Allied crossings of the Rhine. S/Sgt. Brad Jones, a B-26 Marauder toggleer, recently was awarded a Silver and three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters to his Air Medal. Brad has completed forty-eight bombing missions with the ninth Air Force John "Mac" McNamara received his wings recently and was commissioned an ensign in the Naval Air Corps. Lt. Charlie Drake has been credited- with bringing down a Jap dive bomber which was less than 300 feet above the water, making a run straight at a destroyer, in the Okinawa operations. Drake came down down from 3,000 feet and caught up with the Jap.
Service Promotions:—All sorts of fanfares. Ist Lt. Bob Leslie, Ens. Bill Branch, Lt. Stan Gates, Ens. Jim Vonßohr, Ens. Len Gammel, 2nd Lt. Don Furber, 2nd Lt. Charlie DeShazo, Ens. Mort Tralhimer, Ens. Jack Van Cleve, 2nd Lt. Charles Furness, and Ens. Ed Linsley.
Happy Honeymooners:—Hugh MacNamee and Mimi McQuiston of Wellesley tied the knot there in the latter part of June. Don Hutchinson was best man and Bobby Kimball an usher, so it was an all-Dartmouth affair, and the latter tells us it was quite a blast. Ensign Dave Lampert was married to Miss Irma Mendelsohn of Brookline, Mass., and Wheaton, several weeks ago.
Well guys, that about winds up the newsthis month. This is your column and the moreyou write the longer it will be—'see ya.
