ANEW DEPARTMENT in Naval Science and Tactics, voted by the Dartmouth Board of Trustees, was inaugurated at the College with the start of the Summer Term in preparation for establishment of the NROTC Unit here in November. Rating full academic standing, the new department is staffed with eight Naval officers who hold regular faculty rank.

The new members of the College teaching staff are: Professor and Chairman of the Department, Captain Damon E. Cummings, USN, commanding officer of the V-12 Unit; Assistant Professor, Lt. Cmdr. Homer Howard, USNR; Instructors, Lieutenants Francis C. Eaton, USNR, Arthur C. Krohn, USNR, Andrew C. Marsters, USNR, Homer P. Schilling, USNR, and Wayne M. Singer, USNR, together with Lt. (jg) Eugene L. Pirog who took over the teaching assignment of Lt. James H. Beardsley, USNR, pending the. latter's late arrival.

With the exception of Captain Cummings, the other members of the new department have just been assigned to Dartmouth. Lt. Comdr. Howard was executive officer of the NROTC at Notre Dame and before that was commanding officer of the Navy V-is Unit at Oberlin. All the new instructors have had active sea duty in this war, some for as long as four years, and all wear combat ribbons.

Although Dartmouth's new NROTC Unit does not actually begin until November, NROTC courses in seamanship, navigation and communication are being taught this term under the V-12 program, and the Navy officers have joined the College faculty for this purpose.
