Since 1847, the Solon Palmer Company has been in the business of making perfumes. And since that date, in an unbroken line, a member of the Palmer family has personally guided the fortunes of the company. Newest Palmer being groomed for the presidency of the concern is Solon Maxfield Palmer '34, the fifth generation in direct succession.

At present secretary of the organization in charge of sales, sales promotion and advertising, young Palmer comes to his trade with qualifications of training as well as inheritance. He worked in the plant summers while he attended Dartmouth and graduated as a chemistry major. And for a year he took graduate courses in chemistry at Columbia night school.

For the next five years, he had various assignments in the office and the fieldfilling orders in the stock room, bottling, soap pressing, and even compounding perfumes. Primarily he is interested in production or the creative side of the business. So thorough was his training and his all-round capability that in 1939 he was appointed sales manager and was given charge of the company's promotion and advertising.

As an undergraduate at Dartmouth, Palmer was a member of Boot and Saddle, an interest he still retains and put to use as a member of the U. S. Cavalry during the war, and was editor-in-chief of Pictorial. He was married in . 1936 and is the father of two girls. Whether Susan and Phebe fit into the Palmer succession has not been determined.
