FOLLOWING appointment by President Dickey and the Board of Trustees of the Dartmouth Outing Club, John A. Rand 38 took over the duties of Director of the D.0.C., and Merrill F. McLane '42, those of Associate Director, early in Janu- ary. Rand had returned to Hanover in the fall to resume his post of Graduate Man- ager, which he had held before going into service in 1942. McLane whose home is in Rockport, Mass., has just been discharged from the Marine Corps, in which, as a first lieutenant, he led a rifle platoon through some of the toughest campaigns of the Pacific. He received the Bronze Star at Guam in July 1944, when he was cited for inspiring leadership against overwhelming odds. With half his platoon casualties, he prevented a major pentration by the enemy of a major beach-head. As an undergraduate at Dartmouth, while serving as a mountain guide during the summer, he aided in the famous rescue of the man who parachuted to the top of Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
