New Auditorium, as War Memorial, Will Bear the Name of Mr. Hopkins
February 1946

FOLLOWING recommendations made to it by the Dartmouth Alumni Council, the Board of Trustees at its Hanover meeting on January 12 voted to name the College's new auditorium building after President Emeritus Hopkins and to incorporate into the building appropriate memorials to the Dartmouth men in military service in World War II and to those who gave their lives in service. The Trustees authorized construction of the hall as soon as building conditions will permit, calling meanwhile for a re-study of plans so as to increase daily use of the auditorium building by students, faculty and alumni for instructional and social activities; and they also authorized similar immediate construction of the proposed addition to the Wilder Physics Laboratory. Further approving the Council's recommendations, the Board voted to appropriate the Reconversion Reserve Fund of nearly $800,000 to the total financial requirements of $2,000,000 for the proposed construction program.

Following are the votes adopted by the Dartmouth Trustees:

VOTED That the Trustees express to the Alumni Council their appreciation for the thorough consideration given by the Alumni Council and its special committee to these matters and to assure the Council that their recommendations and fund-raising program have encouraged the Trustees to take specific action at this time.

VOTED To appropriate the Reconversion Reserve Fund toward the total financial requirements of the proposed construction program, especially the auditorium building on the site of Bissell Hall to contain in addition to the auditorium facilities for the musical, dramatic and other instructional and social activities of the College.

VOTED To authorize the Committee on Physical Development and Maintenance of the Plant to cause a re-study of the plans to be made for increased daily use of the auditorium building by students, faculty, and alumni generally and to proceed with construction as soon as building conditions permit.

VOTED That this auditorium building bear the name of Ernest Martin Hopkins.

VOTED That there be incorporated into the building appropriate memorials to the Dartmouth men in military service in the recent war and to those who gave their lives in the military service.

FURTHER VOTED That the construction of the proposed addition to the Wilder Physics Laboratory be commenced as soon as building conditions permit.
