Two major rules changes will be introduced to collegiate football this fall and they should make the games of more interest to the spectators:
1. Point-After-Touchdown: The first scoring change in 46 years now awards two points if you successfully rush or pass after a touchdown, one point if you kick. As one coach commented, "Whatever you decide will probably be wrong."
2. Liberalized Substitutions: The new rule permits a player who leaves a game in a quarter to return once at any time during that quarter. Previously he could not return during the same quarter except during the final two minutes. While not providing a complete return to the twoplatoon days, the rule does mean that most coaches will substitute largely by teams and it places an even greater emphasis on squad depth.
This fall, while helping the football coaching staff, Coach Julian lined up team members for a "Football Talent Night Show" and was so impressed with the performance that he's setting up as a booking agent. The show featured halfback "Moose" Morton on the drums with guards Bob Naegele and Terry O'Neil doing a dance routine. Tackles Lee Horschman and Sam Bowlby teamed up to do a rousing skit titled "An Ivy League Coach on a Recruiting Trip," while another tackle, Dave Bathrick, was featured in a song number. A quartet of ends Bill Hibbs and Jon Stockholm, center Dune Lanum and tackle Bill Miller gave some fine renditions accompanied by Tom Conger on the guitar.
