Art Proposal
To THE EDITOR:
Dartmouth is a self-styled college of "liberal arts."
Surely this embraces, among other things, a beginning appreciation of art—even among those students who don't intend to be artists.
To my knowledge, no attempt has been made to assemble a worth-while, representative collection of fine pictures at Dartmouth. Yet we read of the magnificent start made in this direction by such an institution as the University of Arizona. And we know that even a prep-school such as Andover has its Addison Gallery which houses a splendid collection of American painting, early furniture, Revere silver, sculpture and ship models.
Perhaps if alumni of the College were presented with some plan for a permanent art collection at Hanover, valuable contributions would be forthcoming. If each of the sixtyodd classes donated one good work of art, it would be a fine beginning. And it might set a precedent for each graduating class to leave behind a concrete expression of their appreciation for all things Dartmouth.
