THE CLASS OF 1931 climaxed a highly successful 25th Reunion on commencement weekend by presenting to the College the record sum of $26,217 as a Class Memorial Fund gift. At the class banquet on Saturday night, June 29, President Dickey accepted this principal amount from J. Lee Bausher, chairman of 1921's 25th Reunion Gift Committee, and paid tribute to the class for setting a new high mark in the rapidly developing Memorial Fund program which has produced a total of $225,091 since its inception. The previous record was set two years ago by 1919 with a fund of $25,541.
1981 had a right to feel proud of itself, for it not only created Memorial Fund history but came through with $8,882, or 107% of its objective, in the 1946 Alumni Fund campaign, which was winding up at just about the time the class was holding its 25th reunion in Hanover. A model of coordinated work was achieved by Mr. Bausher and the 1921 Class Agent, Edward S. Price, resulting in the doubly fine figures posted.
Another high figure for the class was its reunion attendance of 113 members, 75 wives, and 45 sons and daughters. Among the reunion reminiscences of the '2iers were the ways in which it had won the freshman rush, had been victorious in taking its class picture in sophomore year, and had prevented the sophomores from taking their class picture the following year. One of 1921's leading reuners was Under Secretary of the Navy John L. Sullivan, and two others were John W. Hubbell, former chairman of the Alumni Fund, and retiring President J. William Embree, former head of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. To succeed Mr. Embree the 25-year class elected Thomas V. Cleveland who, mindful of past solidarity and success and of the achievements of the reunion weekend, said: "This class, demonstrating again its love for all that Dartmouth means now and for the future, pledges anew its loyalty to the College and to its already beloved new President, John Sloan Dickey. The class pays its tribute to Dartmouth's beloved 'Hoppy' and in the spirit in which he always served the College stands ready to give its help in whatever fashion called upon."
