A blend of senior experience and sophomore pizzazz could be the ingredients that give Dartmouth's hockey team a definite boost into the upper echelons of the Ivy League standings this winter.
"We have strong goal-tending, three lines that can score, and a power play that is beginning to jell," said Grant Standbrook, the freshman coach for the past three years who has taken over the varsity this season.
Rather than putting his veterans together and building a sophomore line, Standbrook has produced a combination throughout his lines—and the results bore fruit in a 7-3 win over what is considered a good group of Dartmouth freshmen.
His basic lines on the eve of the December 1 opener at New Hampshire are sophomores Dave Walkom and Dana Johnson along with high-scoring senior Jeff Kosak in the first unit. The second line is centered by junior Mike Turner with seniors Dave Kirkland and Captain Ken Davidson on the wings, and the third line has senior Dave Hill, who has recovered from a spleen injury suffered last January, centering for sophomores Dave Sullivan and Fred Riggall.
The top defensive pairs are junior Don Anderson and sophomore Jake Johnston plus senior Vince Orchard and sophomore Jim Edgeworth. Mike Barle, another senior, and sophomore Gary Osmond are the third pair with Bruce Ling and Dan Holland rounding out the defense.
At this stage, sophomore Peter Proulx has moved ahead of Dale Dunning, the junior who was the regular goalie last year. It could make for a healthy situation, provided, of course, that Standbrook is able to come up with a stronger defense than Dartmouth has had for the past few years.
A major test will come on Dec. 18-19 when the Indians compete in the ECAC Holiday Tournament at Boston Garden, opening against Boston College. The other entries are national champion Cornell and New Hampshire. The Green also is in the Nichols Tournament on Jan. 1-2 at Buffalo against Yale, Michigan and York University from Toronto.
