THE GREATEST NUMBER of contributors in the history of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund gave $372,103.24 during the 1947 campaign to easily surpass the $350,000 goal.
According to final figures released by George H. Colton '35, executive secretary of the Alumni Council's Fund committee, gifts were received from 13,538 men, or 80 per cent of the total used as a scoring base for participation. The previous record of 13,509 was set in 1944. The all-time high for money contributed was made in 1946, when special gifts honoring President-Emeritus Hopkins swelled the total to $416,777.
Twenty-nine classes, led by the Class of 1892, equalled or exceeded objectives. The first five in order were: 1892, 690 per cent; 1888, 404 per cent; 1887, 329 per cent; 1889, 329 per cent; and 1900, 217 per cent.
The Class of 1915, with John R. Mason as class agent, took top honors for the largest dollar total, $13,759, followed by the Classes of 1918, 1914, 1927, 1923, 1926 and 1928.
In the Green Derby a photo-finish was provided by Group IV, where five classes came across the June 30 finish line closely bunched. The Class of 1928, led by Class Agent William G. Morton, nosed out the Class of 1927 and the Class of 1931 by only one point. Right on their heels were the Class of 1930 and the Class of 1935, tied for third.
In Group I the Class of 1900, with Class Agent Clarence G. MacDavitt, took first honors for the fourth successive year. The Classes of 1901 and 1906 finished second and third, respectively.
In Group II the Class of 1915 won its first Derby by a clean-cut victory over the Class of 1914. These two classes battled it out until the close of the campaign when '14 produced an edge in both participation and money contributed.
The Class of 1918 fought its way from fifth to first in the closing days, thus winning its fifth Derby and fourth in a row in Group 111. The Class of 1921 finished only a step behind and was followed closely by 1926 and 1925.
The Class of 1941, with Lewis K. Johnstone as its agent, took its first Derby laurels in Group V. Runner-ups were 1939, 1936, and 1940. The Class of 1947 gained first place for the third time in the Little Green Derby.
