IN TRIBUTE TO Theodore J. Marriner '14, who was assassinated while serving as United States Consul-General in Syria, the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, in cooperation with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, has named its latest expedition the Theodore Marriner Memorial Expedition to Syria. The joint expedition, which began last month, will explore an ancient site near the Turkish border, midway between the cities of Aleppo, Syria, and Mosul, Iraq.
Consul-General Marriner, who was assassinated in Beirut, Syria, on October 12, 1937 by a demented Armenian, had, during his assignment in Syria, found his principal intellectual stimulus in the work of the Oriental Institute, and had made many friends among the men engaged in the Institute's archaeological excursions.
