Henry D. Crowley '98 of Dorchester, Mass., class secretary for many years, retired May 31 as chief of the Social Security Division of the Boston office, U. S. Internal Revenue. He was 71 on July 5.
Appointed assistant chief in 1936, Mr. Crowley helped to organize the administration of the Social Security law in the Bay State. During its first year of operation, the law involved 70,000 Massachusetts employers who filed tax returns amounting to nearly 25 million dollars. Last year almost 65 million dollars were paid by 87,000 employers.
Since the Social Security law went into effect, Mr. Crowley has made some 50,000 decisions in connection with government rulings.
Following his graduation from Dartmouth and the Boston University School of Law, he began his practice of law in Boston in 1900. He was a member of Gov. E. N. Ness' military staff from 1912 to 1913. He also served as treasurer of three Boston companies, the Marsh Motor Car Cos. from 1919 to 1921, the P. R. Warren Cos. from 1922 to 1924 and the Engineer Exploration Cos. from 1927 to 1928.
For two years before his appointment to the Social Security division, Mr. Crowley was assistant chief of the Miscellaneous Division, Boston office of the U. S. Internal Revenue department.
