There are times when those who live in Hanover are convinced that Eleazar Wheelock might better have followed the opposite end of the compass needle he employed on his trip up the Connecticut. This is one of those times. Two days before the Cornell game and an inch and a half of frozen snow covers Memorial Field.

Your secretary has, however, thawed out with a reasonable response to his request for letters and without further padding this is the relay from shortstop, to second, to first beginning with a note from Art Sprague:

"I was looking over the ALUMNI MAGAZINE a few minutes ago and noted that you said the record so far was 0-0-0 as far as letters received was concerned. This will at least make the story one (1) received—but news still practically zero.

"Since I saw you last, I have moved to Portland. (155 Devereau Circle, South Portland 7, Maine). Lack of housing in St. Johnsbury (Vt.), plus the desire to be nearer the bulk of my business, prompted the move. At this writing we have one and two-third's children (a girl three and a half years old and a boy 15 months under one-year-old). Both are very active and keep us humping.

"Haven't bumped into any '37 men here yet but hope to soon. Dana Douglass is here according to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and I plan to look him up. Will also try to locate others in this not so small state "

Ed. Note: Art is not only a southpaw golfer, he is an optimist of considerable stature if we interpret his remarks concisely.

Mrs. Jack Devlin demonstrates her journalistic skill with a full account of the annual North Shore clambake at Bill Brown's home on Eastern Point in Gloucester, Mass.

"The date was Saturday, September 13, and quite a few fellows in the New England area were able to make it together with their wives.

"There was a keg of beer on tap from 2 p.m. until the last drop was drained about 1 o o'clock. During the afternoon a softball game was held on the spacious lawn. Just as the gong rang for chow, a shower came up, but it was a small matter as we headed for the summer house, where a cheery fire was soon glowing in the fireplace and all food was quickly consumed.

"Bib Bankart brought along an old pinball machine which caught a few loose nickles. It gave out a few, too, but they all managed to find a way back into the machine.

"Following is a list of '37'ers who went home resolving to make a clambake an annual reunion and with deep appreciation and thanks to Bill Brown, Larry Brooks, AI Bryant and all who made it a success: Jim, Jean, Peggy Luttrell; Bill and Patty Rotch; A 1 and Sherry Bryant; Charles and Virginia Collis; Ernie April and wife; Les and Cecelia Barrett; Jake Newton; Bob and Kay Bankart; Art Guyer; Bill Brown; Larry and Katie Brooks; Ca and Eleanor Eldred; Monk and Dorothy Amon; Dex and Margie Smith; Dick and Bea Woods; George and Peg Rower; Em Bentley; Fred and Esther Mayo; Pete McLane, and Jack and Dorothy Devlin.''

Bill Rotch, who is forming a one-man committee on a directory for the class, has forwarded his idea and an outline of his progress on the project which are of general interest to all of us.

"Size: small, pocket-size, for convenience. This necessitates small type for a class the size of ours, but is more than compensated for by the usefulness of a pocket-size book.

"Content: Names, addresses, a page of class officers, etc., and at the back a geographical breakdown; by states is detailed enough, I think, because if you find a guy named Jones lives in Utah, it is easy enough to check back in the main directory to find just where in Utah.

"Addresses: home address where possible, business address where desirable. If a classmate works in New York, his New Rochelle home address isn't much help when one wants to call him up and make a date for lunch. If a guy works in Milford, N. H., one address or the other is sufficient.

"Other data: my feeling is, omit it. Data on family, etc., seem unnecessary. Some Class directories have included 'position'—i.e. general manager, and 'type of work'—i.e. salesman, printer, etc. I say leave it out, partly because, thanks to war, a lot of classmates are still in a state of flux, and it doesn't mean much. Also the more stuff that is included, the bigger book it makes.

"We'll try to get it in the mail as soon as possible."

Jake Newton, our former dishwashing pal freshman year (four hours a day for the privilege of feeding our hungry stomachs at Tiny's eating club) has recently been elected Chairman of the Worcester (Mass.) Chapter, National Association of Cost Accountants

Charlie La Flamme, who, you will remember, was with us in college until he lost his leg in an auto accident on the Lebanon road, left recently for Korea. Charlie has been selected as a civilian liaison between the military government in Korea and the Korean civilian government Bill Rotch also forwards the information that Phil Robertson appeared before the New Hampshire Governor and Council this fall and spoke in defense of the Cannon Mt. tramway expansion project in a very effective manner. (We remember quite vividly Roy Hatch once attempted to expand one of the ski trails all by himself back in 1940. If Roy flew a B-29 the way he skied, the air wasn't safe in his vicinity.) Re Phil again, a letter from him inclosing four bucks to Rug indicated the Reunion was a hit with the Robertson family. "Was good to see the gang, to feel a real part of something that is worthwhile, and to feel a little more than a visitor at College. It was my first sight of the new President and I was impressed—a fine skipper I'd say."

Bob Alyward is now on the Department of State payroll, and his first assignment calls for a year of study at Cornell in Chinese language. From Ithaca, his next stop will be Peiping. His current address 200 Miller St., Ithaca, N. Y.

Which is all the wordage allowed for this month and enough left over in the files for a full spread in January. Oh, happy, happy results from a very mild complaint!
