THE FALL PARTY featuring golf and dinner at the Essex Country Club, held on October 28, was voted a success by those present. About sixty turned out for a top-grade turkey dinner and social evening. Dave McCathie '28, manager for the Country Club, really polished up the letters on the welcome mat and provided those touches which add that certain warmth and flavor necessary to change a coldblooded restaurant deal into a party.
After careful discussion, your Board of Governors has been forced to several conclusions regarding the management of your Association. First, that it is not possible to estimate expenses so accurately in advance as to assure that each party will be self-supporting. Second, that where deficits occur they can no longer be made up by appealing to those few who have been handing it out in past years. Third, that the Treasury cannot always be on the verge of bankruptcy and the only businesslike answer is annual dues to help defray printing, mailing and incidental expenses. Fourth, tha't those not interested in the Association should be dropped from the mailing list.
Consequently, our announcement of the Fall Party included a tear-off return piece with two questions: (1) "Are you interested in the affairs of the Association and do you wish to receive notice of our parties?" (2) "Will you contribute dues at $2.00 for the period October 1, 1947 to October 1, 1948?'' We also endeavored to make it plain that those who made no return would be dropped from our mailing list.
It, Was emphasized and should be repeated that there is no intention of removing any interested alumnus from the list regardless of whether or not he is willing to pay dues. The object is rather to reduce the heavy costs involved in maintaining a list of approximately 800 names since experience seems to indicate that there are many who have no interest in the Association's affairs.
ARE YOU INTERESTED? DID YOU RETURN THE QUESTIONNAIRE? If you did not and you wish to receive future notices, please advise the Secretary, S. A. Perkins, 11 Norman Circle, Madison, N. J., and if also willing to contribute dues, enclose your check for $2.00 to the order of Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern New Jersey. I'd resentfully suggest you do this before it slips your "blind, as work on the new mailing list will be .well under way by the time you read these notes.
As this is written about November 1, the questionnaire returns have not been fully tabulated but the results are gratifying. Although considerable shrinkage from the list of 800 is to be expected, your Board feels a more active and progressive group will result.
