A plan which will benefit the Dartmouth library and at the same time create a useful and long-time memorial to deceased classmates has been adopted by the Class of 1914. Instead of sending flowers at the time of a classmate's death, 1914 will contribute $10.00 each time to a fund for the purchase of rare and beautiful books to be placed in Baker Library. The plan has actually been in operation since 1945 (and the class hopes that special contributions will provide the same memorial for men who died before the plan started), but it Was not until last month that the special memorial bookplate reproduced above was ready for insertion in each volume.
A special engraved card, bearing the Dartmouth seal in green, has also been prepared tor mailing to the family of the deceased classmate. It states: "In the name of our beloved classmate the Class of—has contributed to a fund for the purchase of rare and beautiful books to be placed in the Dartmouth College Library. A suitable volume will carry our classmate's name inscribed upon its bookplate as a living memorial."
Both the bookplate and engraved card have been designed so that they may be used by any Dartmouth class that adopts this plan initiated by 1914. The Class of 1939, for'one, is planning a similar library memorial to the classmates who were killed in World War II. It is believed that the plan will gradually appeal to all classes, and that to the families such a permanent memorial will be far more satisfying than a floral tribute.
