Three Students Killed
June 1947

IN ONE OF THE worst automobile accidents of recent Dartmouth history, three undergraduates lost their lives when the automobile in which they were riding crashed head-on into a ten-ton truck and trailer on U.S. Route 5 at North Hartland, Vt., five miles south of White River Junction in the early morning of May 8.

The three men were Frederick T. Sillars '48 of Pittsfield, Mass., John Lopez '47 0f Lodi, N. J., and Charles K. Long '46 of Collingswood, N. J. All three men were seniors. Sillars, the driver, and Lopez would have graduated this month and Long in February. All were members of Gamma Delta Chi fraternity.

The accident occurred at 4.10 a.m. as the students were driving south to Northampton, Mass., and New Jersey to pick up their dates for Green Key Weekend. All three, were killed instantly. The car, a 1940 convertible Ford borrowed from Arthur C. Barwood of Hanover, was demolished. Because of the death of three of its members, Gamma Delta Chi voted at the last minute to cancel its Green Key house party.
