YET ANOTHER ELECTION looms large for alumni as voting begins April 28 to select a new executive committee for the Association of Alumni.

Last year six members of the committee launched a lawsuit against the board of trustees to stop the seating of new charter trustees. The election could determine the fate of the suit—and the future makeup of the board, so many view the election as a referendum on the lawsuit.

"I'm against it," says presidential candidate John Mathias '69, a lawyer from Chicago. "I think it is important that the candidates be up-front about that. It's a defining issue in this election." Mathias and a set of similar-minded candidates have pledged to drop the legal action if elected.

A separate slate of petition candidates promises to keep the legal action alive. "It's a very simple election," says presidential candidate Michael Murphy '61 of Windermere, Florida. "One whole slate is pledged to immediately drop the lawsuit. Our petition slate is committed to continuing whatever we can to reverse the decision of ending parity on the board. I believe alumni involvement is enormous, and our rights, if diminished, will hurt Dartmouth."
