ONE OF THE largest bequests ever made to Dartmouth College, amounting to $615,752, has been received in the final settlement of the estate of the late Sherman B. Ward '13 of Wilton, N. H., it was announced by President Dickey last month. This sum, representing nine-tenths of the residuary estate, of Mr. Ward, is to be devoted to the general purposes of the College, according to the terms of the bequest.
Under the terms of the will, Mrs. Ward had the income of the estate as long as she lived. Upon her death a few years ago, onetenth of the residuary estate was left to Phillips Exeter Academy of Exeter, N. H., and nine-tenths to Dartmouth College. Tax litigation delayed final settlement until recently. The executors and trustees of the estate were, in addition to Mrs. Ward, Mr. Frank Stewart of Boston and President Emeritus Ernest .Martin Hopkins.
Mr. Ward, who died on July 3, 1943, at Boston after a brief illness, was a quietly active supporter of his class and the College. He attended all reunions, and was a generous contributor to the Alumni Fund. At the time of his death he had been associated with Stowe & Woodward, Inc., Newton Upper Falls, Mass.,. for 36 years and was president of the concern. After graduating from Exeter and Dartmouth he was associated with American Agricultural Chemical from 1913 to 1916. A native of Portsmouth, N. H., he was married while still in College to Delia M. Gordon in 1912.
EIGHTH LARGEST GIFT TO COLLEGE
According to Halsey C. Edgerton '06, Treasurer of the College, the Ward gift is exceeded in amount by only seven other individual gifts in the College's history. Gifts by Edward Tuck, George F. Baker, Albert O. Brown, William N. Cohen. Mrs. Russell Sage, Edwin W. Sanborn and an anonymous donor exceed the Ward gift, as does an institutional gift by the General Education Board. The Ward bequest brings to eleven the number of donors whose gifts each exceed a half million dollars. In addition to the above, Emil Bommer and Tappan Wentworth have aided the College in excess of that amount. Of these donors Mr. Tuck, Mr. Brown, Mr. Cohen, Judge Sanborn, Mr. Wentworth and Mr. Ward were alumni.
The Ward bequest has been added to the endowment funds of the College for the present, and its income will be used to meet rising costs of operation.
