MARCH with its election day and political interests dawned "brite and fair."

Dartmouth defeated Cornell 18 to 10 in Hanover and thus took second place to Columbia at the top in the basketball league. . . . . E. E. Mensel was chosen to captain the All-Eastern team selection of Mensel with Walker of Penn., guards; center, Parkinson of Wesleyan; forwards, Sisson of Dartmouth and Davidson of Wesleyan. Second team: guards, Hayward of Wesleyan and Loudon of Dartmouth; center, Pearce of Penn.; forwards, Benson of Columbia and Snow of Dartmouth. . . . . The Athletic Council announced eight contests for the freshman baseball team and four meets for the varsity track team, with a "D" awarded to anyone scoring a point in the Harvard-Dartmouth dual meet.

Rev. Walter Taylor Sumner '9B, Dean of the Cathedral of S. S. Peter and Paul in Chicago, made four addresses under the auspices of the D. C. A. and the Men's Club of St. Thomas Church from the pulpit of St. Thomas', in A Dartmouth, and at the Graduates Club. He talked on "Social Evils."

J. R. Erwin was elected president of the Senior Class (1912), W. G. Knapp, vice pres., C. E. Snow, sec., L. W. Snow, treas.,' W. B. Elcock, Marshall, E. W. Gammons, Ass't Marshall and F. D. Day, floor director of the commencement ball W. L. Fletcher from his Bridgeman Block 2nd floor store advertised 2-piece suits at $25.00, Norfolks at $27.00 and 3-piece suits at $28.00.

Four Dartmouth records were broken in the indoor track meet in the Gym. Marc Wright '13 topped the bar in the pole vault at 12' 1", Franc Marceau '14 hung up the half-mile record in 2 min. 3 sec., L. A. Whitney '15 again broke the college record in the 12 lb. shot—49' 71/%" and Durgin '15 in the novice 50 yard dash with 6 sec. lowered the record 1/5 of a second.

The "Charming Chaperone" by J. Ted Marriner '14 and Dwight Conn 'l4 was awarded $ 125.00 for the prom show, with R. L. Wilkinson 'l4 and E. V. N. Bissell '15 second and a prize of $75.00 for "The Fussers." .... Nevers 2nd Regiment Orchestra of Concord played at the Saturday night Smoker,—"Snider and his dog," which was whistled by the audience during and after the concert bid fair to rank with "Board" and "Hello Rosa" as a campus institution Dr. Anna Howard Shaw spoke on "Equal Suffrage" in Webster Hall. She told how in this Government of the people, women- had had a long hard fight even to be recognized as people and then only from "the reluctant Supreme Court."

Proctor House, where Rufus Choate once roomed, was removed to make way for South Mass Pres. Nichols presided at the first meeting of the newly organized New Hampshire Peace Society at Concord Rev. David Brewer Eddy, a Yale graduate, addressed the college on behalf of Foreign Missions John N. Loomis '15 and C. K. Blackburn '14 formed a committee to frame a Constitution for the Nebraska and Council Bluffs Club.

Election day in Hanover with voting at Etna was March twelfth. A large number of students attended Town Meeting and E. P. Storrs and Prof. F. A. Updyke were chosen convention delegates "not instructed." With Prof. Edwin J. Bartlett as Moderator, it was voted to hold the primaries and biennial elections in Hanover.

Hanover proved its radicalism and, in spite of efforts of the Taft League, Daniel Basil O'Connor '12, "formerly of Taunton, South Boston," was elected Mayor to succeed Swede Needham '11. O'Connor stood on the platform of "graft, equal suffrage and more whiskey." .... After forming in the city square, the parade led by the city band and the entire police force, rounded the Campus Martius and stopped at the Commons Plaza, where, before a large crowd, the campaign manager introduced the mayor and other speakers: C. B. Jordan '15, C. E. Snow '12, H. B. Lines '12 and Lloyd Knight '12. Reformers advocated the recall of the faculty, student representation on the administration, a free dispensary of stimulants for debaters and other athletes, a female seminary and an increase of holidays.

The Secretaries Association met in the faculty room in the Administration Bldg. W. A. Parkinson '78 was elected president, L. M. Symmes '08 vice president, A. K. Skinner '03 secretary-treasurer and C. A. Perkins '90, C. A. Donahue '99 and H. E. Keyes '00 executive committee The Class of '01 presented the novice prizes for the winter Indoor Meets and individual members of the Alumni offered sprint prizes and plaques for middle and long distances, the hurdles and the weight events.

A "re-elect Taft meeting" was held in A Dartmouth with Prof. Frank H. Dixon, chairman, and Wilfred H. Smart '07 as speakers. A Dartmouth Taft League was formed and H. K. Urion '12 was elected pres., M. Whittemore '12, vice pres., E. C. Gordon '12, sec.-treas., and an executive committee of H. R. Trewin '12, K. H. Fulmer '13, E. E. Mensel '12, A. K. Lowell '13 and A. H. Dessau '13.

Judge Ben Lindsay spoke to the college in Webster Hall on "The Juvenile Court" and then went to A Dartmouth, where a Theodore Roosevelt Club was being formed, to predict a "New Hampshire Roosevelt landslide in November." L. B. Schell '12 presided at this meeting and J. R. Erwin '12 was elected pres., "Bud" Schell '12, vice pres., H. A. Bellows '12, sec.-treas., with an executive committee of E. D. Chapman '12, L. W. Snow '12, M. C. Avery '13, C. G. Tyler '12, W. T. Englehorn '14, H. F. Lena '13 and J. A. Steen '12. The College Band was practically solid for Roosevelt so this club had no difficulty in procuring music.

Then another group not to be outdone and following the lead of Prof. George Ray Wicker formed the "Governor Woodrow Wilson for President Club." W. B. Elcock '12, pres., D. B. O'Connor '12, vice pres., J. C. Baker '14, sec.-treas., Prof. Wicker, R. J. Powers '13 and W. A. Ryan '12, executive committee was the result of the voting.

The sophomore (1914) relay team, composed of Hands, Hayward, O'Connor and Olson, clipped 21/5, seconds from the former time for a new record of 1 min. 574/5,, sec. in the second indoor meet. The race was a marvel for see-sa'Wing of classes in the lead until the last lap Olson, who had stumbled as he started, finally breasted the tape just ahead of Gardner '13, and Granger '15 brought up the rear Two more meets with new records for the mile, Franz Marceau '15, 4 min. 29%, sec.; the high jump, Jake Enright '13, six feet; the 12 lb. shot, Bud Whitney '15, 52 feet 514 inches; the pole vault, Marc Wright '13, 12 feet, 2 inches; the 16 lb. shot, Whitney, 45 feet 9½ inches; the half mile, Joe Dolan '13, 1 min. 583/5 sec.

Dartmouth met Brown and Williams in the 7th Triangular Debate in Hanover, Williamstown and Providence. Brown won the championship from Dartmouth as the affirmative team won in Hanover and the negative obtained the decision over Williams at Providence. Governor Bass of New Hampshire presided at Hanover.
