NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER '30 of New York City was reelected an Alumni Trustee of the College at the annual commencement meeting of the Board on June 14. He will serve a second term of five years, which is the maximum for Alumni Trustees. At present chairman of the board of Rockefeller Center, Inc., Mr. Rockefeller served as Assistant Secretary of State and during the war was Coordinator of Inter-American Relations.

Among other actions, which included the all-important voting of degrees to the 1947 graduating class, the Trustees granted promotions to 22 members of the faculty and approved 16 new appointments to the staff.

Twelve of the faculty promotions were to full professorships, as follows: George L. Scott '25, Education; Arthur Dewing '25, English; Donald H. Morrison, Government: John C. Adams, History; George Z. Dimitroff. Astronomy; Willis M. Rayton, Physics; Ross Stagner, Psychology; Leroy J. Cook, Romance Languages; George E. Diller, French; Harold G. Rugg '06, Assistant Librarian with the rank of Professor; Dimitri von Mohrenschildt, promoted from Visiting Lecturer in Russian Civilization to Professor of Russian History and Literature; and Dr. M. Dawson Tyson, promoted from Assistant Professor of Surgery to Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Medical School.

FOUR MADE ASSISTANT PROFESSORS

Four members of the College faculty promoted from Instructor to Assistant Professor were: Frank G. Ryder, German; William H. Durfee, Mathematics; Harry W. Sampson 21, Physical Education; and Samuel Feldman, Psychology. Similar promotions for six members of the Medical School faculty were also approved., as follows: John B. McKenna, Assistant Professor of Neuroanatomy and Psychiatry; Radford C. Tanzer '25, Assistant Professor of Surgery; John A. Murtagh, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology; Sven M. Gundersen, Assistant Professor of Medicine; George A. Lord '30, Assistant Professor of Surgery; and Ralph W. Hunter '31, Assistant Professor of Neuroanatomy and Neurology.

Among new appointments, Thomas W. Braden '40, who has been Instructor in English this year, was named Executive Secretary of the Great Issues Course for 1947-48, and Alexander Fanelli '42 was named Assistant in the Public Affairs Laboratory for the same course.

Two new Assistant Professors who join the faculty next fall are Lawrence G. Hines, Economics, and H. Gordon Skilling, Government. New instructors include Thomas J. Murray, Economics; Edward A. Chalfant '42 and Judson S. Lyon '40, English; and Rogelio A. Casas, Spanish.

Millett G. Morgan, now Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering, has been named Assistant Dean of Thayer School. Two new men joining the engineering faculty are Edmund J. Byrkit '47, Instructor in Civil Engineering, and Fox hall A. Parker '48, Teaching Fellow in Engineering. Hanford L. Auten '32, formerly of the Dartmouth Eye Institute, has joined the Medical School faculty as Instructor in Ophthalmology.

Three new Teaching Fellows are Henry M. De Angelis '47, Chemistry; John W. Howard '46, Chemistry; and Philip E. Hildreth '45, Zoology. Morrel H. Cohen and Robert H. Terhune will serve as Research Assistants in physics.

Leaves of absence for the full academic year 1947-48 were granted by the Trustees to Trevor Lloyd, Professor of Geography, and George W. Schoenhut, Instructor in English and Technical Director of The Players. Howard F. Dunham '11, Professor of French, will be on leave for the first semester next year.
