Dartmouth's newest Rear Admiral, Paul L. Mather '18, became Associate Administrator of the War Assets Administration, January 6, succeeding Jess Larson, recently appointed Administrator.
Rear Admiral Mather's latest post follows a distinguished record in World War 11, during which he participated in the assaults on Casablanca, Sicily and Salerno. He commanded the flagship of Admiral Kirk and Major General Troy Middleton at Sicily and the flagship of Admiral Kent Hewitt and Lt. Gen. Mark Clark at Salerno.
A native of Boston, he prepared for Dartmouth at Milton High School and left College in his junior year in order to serve as a seaman first class in the Naval Reserve. He was commissioned an ensign in the Reserve in 1918 and was integrated in the regular Navy in 1921.
From September 19, 1944 to June, 1945 he was head of the Logistics Division in the Army and Navy Staff College, and later as instructor in logistics at the Naval War College.
After serving in various grades until January 1, 1947, he was retired and promoted to Rear Admiral, U.S.N, on the retired list as a result of being cited in combat. He was recalled to active duty for assignment with the WAA and since January 22, 1947 has served as Deputy Administrator, Office of Plans and Policies; Acting Deputy Administrator, Office of Real Property Disposal; and Special Assistant to the Administrator.
He now makes his home at 5 Newport Avenue, Washington.
