This month we begin with the second installment on John Thirty-five. In January we described him briefly and located him geographically. Now we turn to his marital status; its causes, effects and results. In the first place, it comes as no shock to the Bachelors Club that most of us are married, 87% of the 420 replying, to be exact. That leaves 10% who must sleep in a cold or unlawful bed. Of the balance, one of us is widowed and nine of us divorced. For 1935, only one marriage in 47 has ended in divorce which certainly compares favorably with the current national statistics of one in four. Perhaps a college education helps us to select our wives more intelligently. In addition, it's not a one-sided affair, either, because three-quarters of us chose, or were chosen by, girls who also attended college.

Gentlemen prefer blonds but they marry brunettes as the book says. We must be gentlemen. Only 16% can pick legitimate blond hairs off the blue serge lapel. More than half of us (56%) come right out and admit that the little woman's crowning glory is dark. Nearly a quarter of us hedge a bit and say it s in-between. Four of us give up and can't describe it. Eight take their chances with redheads. And one old-timer, probably without his wife's permission, says it's gray.

As to the year in which we were married, the curve is a' very normal one. It also shows that there is still plenty of opportunity for the bachelors. We began greeting the preacher way back in 1932 and by 1935' when most of us were still wondering what it was all about, twenty-five (7% of those replying) had stepped off the deep end into matrimony. Between 1936 and 1940 more than half of those who were destined to do it, got married. Add 1941 and 1942 and you account for exactly threequarters of our bridal parties. But we're far from coming to a halt. Although it was our poorest showing since school days, ten of us succeeded in slipping over the line last year. You bachelors might as well face the fact that the statistics and the women are stacked against you.

One-quarter of us had known our future wives for one year or less before saying "I do." One third of us were old friends of five years or more when the time came. We run the gamut from a minimum of nine days to a maximum of twenty-six years and "traded diapers." Speaking of diapers, we're doing all right in that department, too. Of the 368 who indicated that they were married, 84% have produced 621 children, 305 boys and 316 girls. This shows how nicely nature takes care of evening up the sexes for us even when we can't seem to do it individually. Breaking it down by numbers we find that 16% are childless, 26% have one child, 37% have two, 18% have three, and a brave little 3% (13 couples) have run the string to four. And there we stop as of December, 1947. This all means that there is an average of 1.7 children per married couple or one-and-a-half children for every doggone man in the class. (Bachelors don t have to take 'em if they don't want 'em.) We have our share of twins, too. There are six sets all together; three sets of boys, one set of girls, and two combinations. Doctors expect twins once in every eighty births. We're running a bit behind with one in every 103. Just one more set will put us ahead. By the way, as far as I know, we have only one Leap Year baby—John Shuttle-worth's daughter, Joan. She's one of that very select and unhappy little group who celebrates a real birthday once every four years.

So much for the statistics until next month. A bit ol news before we close. Russ Kirsch, who is an Army Chaplain stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., as of this moment, had a son Michael, born last December 8. A note from Sid Diamond announces that Santa dropped around with a boy named Stephen two days before Christmas. And still they come; BobbChaney increased his brood by one on the 15th when a new daughter, Mary Delia, arrived.

Dick Hurd has finally broken a long silence with some news on the back of a Christmas card. Hurdo is now a Captain in the regular Army stationed at Biggs Field, El Paso, Texas. Divorced last year, he has since married a girl from New Mexico who was brought up on a ranch, can ride with the best of them, and had Billy the Kid in her family tree. Good luck, Richard-me-lad, and thanks for bringing us up to date.

Boston Doug Ley sends word along: "Cushman had a cocktail party awhile back and who should call him up just before the party but Lou Niles. His story was that Ed Skillin had just blown in from Chicago and wanted to his friends. Isn't that the hard way to get a drink? Drag poor Skillin all the way from Chicago! Millane is now in these parts working for Colby."

Thanks to you, too, Doug. Eddie Offutt, still at the University of Rochester, has recently moved up to an. Assistant Professor "at a reasonable living wage, finally." And by this time he and his wife should have increased their family by one.

George Goodman and his wife spent the New Year's weekend in Hanover just relaxing and enjoying themselves. No skiing for George.

From The New York Herald Tribune, Dec.14: "Canadian North May Be Hiding ValuableOres—Arctic Institute Director Sketches Geologic and Other Goals of Research." Sureenough—it's our northermost class mate, LineWashburn.

"Dr. Washburn has accompanied three research expeditions to the Far North, and has passed one winter and several summers doing geologic field work in .the Canadian Arctic." If Line wants to save himself a little traveling, the New York suburbs at this moment willfurnish him with almost identical conditions, minus Eskimos. As for "hiding valuable ores"we still have two Buicks and a '47 Ford thathaven't been uncovered yet on our blockalone.
