As a memorial to George Alden Ladd '41, who died in India in 1944 while a private with the American Field Service, the Ladd Alcove devoted to poetry (pictured above) has been established in the Tower Room of Baker Library. Funds for the memorial and for the purchase of books of poetry identified by a special bookplate have been contributed by his parents, the Rev. P. Chandler Ladd '05 and Mrs. Ladd of Richmond Hill, N. Y.
George Ladd's death in Calcutta on July 2, 1944, of heart failure, occurred after a year of service on the Burmaborder with the British forces. He joined the American Field Service in 1943, after unsuccessfully endeavoring to enlist for combat service. As a Dartmouth undergraduate, he was a Phi Beta Kappa student, greatly interested in poetry, and in extracurricular activities was executive assistant to the Manager of COSO and a member of Green Key. After graduating he went to Haverford on a Pendle Hill fellowship and there received his M.A. in 1942.
