One more month to go! or hadn't you heard? I'm sure you must have by now-what with the "propaganda" from the Reunion Committee, news in Stan Priddy's paper, via the grapevine and through this column. You guessed it—our reunion is nextmonth! June 18-20.
The returns from my letters have come back pretty well. The results to date are 136 coming to reunion, 55 more aren't sure as yet, and 96 said no. Those fellows that may be able to come are the ones that we want to get at! Bill Maeck is doing everything to keep expenses as low as possible. The College puts us up in dorms so don't worry about housing—that's wives, too. Here are the boys we want to work on —everyone pick a name and single him out to be your man to get to come to reunion. If any of you fellows still want rides—just write to me. We have fellows coming from Texas, Colorado, Georgia, and all over and I'll tell you whom to contact.
The Boston Herald gave our hoy JohnnyKrol a nice write-up the other day, and I quote:
"Johnny Krol, former Waltham High and Dartmouth athlete, is doing an outstanding job in his first year as athletic director at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Virginia. This country day school for boys engaged in outside competition for the first time under Krol's guidance.
The results were amazing in that the football squad, comprising only 22 players, won six out of eight games and the basketball team won the city championship."
Nice work Johnny!
Some of our boys graduated this spring-April 9, to be exact,—they are Frank Hussey,Alan Grant, Henry Coulter, Bob Purely, and Tom Gerber. Congratulations to you all.
Here is an item from the March 19 issue of The Dartmouth that is of special interest to our class. " 'Doc' Fielding stole the show in the Band's Variety Night before a packed house in Webster last night.
His jokes and burlesque on ballet dancing helped, but his imitations of well-known vocalists clinched it. Records furnished the music, Fielding supplied the entertainment. He started with 'Sonny Boy a la Jerry Colona, and the audience refused to let him go until he had done five more."
"Doc" has been getting warmed up in various productions for his job as M. C. at a variety show he'll put on at Reunion in our tent.
Here are some news flashes from here, there, and everywhere: engagements first-that of Colette Streit to Tom Schroth in March, Ann Browning to Larry Noble in February, Constance Brown to John Berkley in March and Betty German to Walt Pettit. I have a clipping from The Morning Register, a paper in Des Moines, lowa, which has a picture about five inches square and a caption which goes as follows:
"He's handsome and young, just past 27—was a Sigma Chi at Dartmouth College, is in the sales department of Better Homes and Gardens and drives a new convertible—an eligible bachelor if ever there was one. Marshall A. (Jerry) Souers is his name."
(Don't all rush at once, girls.)
Ted Driscoll became a "proud pop" on March 13 upon the arrival of Pamela Ruth Driscoll. Bob Garvie announced his engagement in January and marriage in March to Elizabeth Wickliffe of Calumet, Michigan. He will be living in Somerville, New Jersey, just around the corner from Bud Johnson. Bob's a salesman with the Plastics Division of the Monsanto Chemical Company. HarryBishop, Capt. M. C., in the army, is stationed at the Veterans Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. Letter from Bob Field in New York. He's associated with the accounting firm of Price, Waterhouse and Company. Hopes to be situated other than in the big city before-long.
The mail bag holds a letter from Paris thisissue—from Bill Zeitung. Bill says: "I am over here with my wife on a Research Foundation fellowship, studying at the Sorbonne for my Doctorat des Lettres. I expect to be here all of two more years and more, probably three.
"We are both crazy about Paris and are getting along very comfortably. I wish you'd tell any '43's who might be in Paris or who might come here in the next two or three years to look me up."
(Bill, last I knew Guy Mallett was living at23 Rue de la Paix, in Paris.) Bill's addressis 9 Rue de L'Universite, Paris, France.
Bing Donaldson, one of my trusty newsgatherers, sent a nice long letter. I'll quoteparts of it:
"Harry Gerber's proposal of a more lasting tribute hits me about perfect. A piano, etc., left me a little cold but this idea seems really meaningful. It might be that some other classes might go along with us on a similar program. If this clicks with as many guys as I think it will I'm for getting out pledges and I'll volunteer for any duty necessary to expedite it in the New York area.
"I'm selling punch card accounting machines for International Business Machines. My beat takes in elements of lower N. Y. C.—very handy to the D club on Friday afternoons. Have lunch with Brooks and Stan Lambert on occasion. Art Clement and Graham Gonklin, Bruce Jones, and many others do a fine job of, helping me endow the N. Y. D. club bar. We are working on our second hundred years now."
(Bing—Dr. Frank Dain's address is: 61 High Ridge, Ridgefield, Conn.)
Dr. Bill Wilson, Veterans Hospital in Gulfport, Miss., married and with one child, a girl, reports that he'll be in Hanover at reunion time. Bill, the addresses you wanted are: Dr. Waldo L. Fielding, 60 Franklin Street, Worcester 8, Mass. and Dr. WilliamH. Wierman, 1790 Forest Street, Denver, Colorado.
Mrs. Martin Borofsky took over the reins for her husband to send news to me. Let's hear from more wives—that's probably the only way I'll hear about some of the fellows! Martin runs an Army and Navy Store for his Dad in Concord, N. H., and is going to open a new store in Claremont soon. They have a son, Stephen, 16 months old.
Our reunion chairman, Bill Maeck, sent me a long letter regarding news of Reunion and things in general so I'll pass on to you the highlights. Most of the information will reach you in the bulletins he and ElmerStevens have worked up. Bill praises "Steve" highly for his excellent work in the Publicity Department.
Committee heads are as follows: Reunion Chairman, Bill Maeck; Publicity, ElmerStevens; Athletic Events, Johnny Koslowski; Class Meeting, Fred Stock-well, Entertainment, "Doc" Fielding.
Our class is to have a Memorial Service together with the class of '44. We're hoping to have it led by a clergyman from one of the two classes.
Uniforms for reunion are being discussed and suggestions from class members will be welcomed.
That about closes things up now except to put in a plug for the Alumni Fund Drive. Our class has lagged behind our quota in past years. The main thing is to get everyone to give—no matter how little—please give!
Don't forget the reunion! June 18-20.
