Several items of importance to consider this month. First is the current Alumni Fund drive which we earnestly and ardently hope will be bigger and better than the previous year. Send your contributions to "Kos" or directly to the College.
Next comes the equally important notice of our Class Reunion August 2-3-4. in the forthcoming Newsletter you will receive a card asking about your plans for that weekend. Fill it out and send it back to "Kos." If you are lucky, you might still get a room reservation at the Inn. Otherwise, you may stay in one of the dormitories the College is setting aside for that purpose. Bring your wives.... but if possible leave Junior home with the in-laws. You can make room reservations through Max Norton. All in all, the weekend will be a grand one. A banquet, a dinner, a picnic at Oak Hill, a dance and plenty of time to hash over old times with fellows you haven't seen for a couple of years.
Received a very nice letter from ClarkMoore, discharged last summer after piloting A-20'S in England and France, now flying from New York with the American Airlines. Besides flying, Clark is taking a number of business courses at the School of Commerce at N.Y.U. Pres, his twin brother, is still in the Navy, recently promoted to a full lieutenant, and currently stationed in Boston as an instructor. Pres will continue his architectural training at Harvard next fall. Also a letter from Tom Gerber with welcome news about himself. Tom was discharged on November 18 after serving with the Bth Air Force in Europe as a navigator on a B-17—398th Bombardment Group, to be exact. He is now on the staff of a weekly newspaper in Suffern, N. Y., reporting, composing and estimating costs. Having left college at the end of his sophomore year he will return in October to finish up. "Barst" Barrows writes from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, that he was discharged from the Navy on March 11, having been commanding officer of a small refrigerated cargo ship operating in the Marshalls. Plans are idefinite at the time being, but he will probably settle in Cleveland in the very near future.
Church Leonard, wife, Dorothy, and their 15-month-old boy (whom we shall call Church Jr. for the time being) are living in Concord, N. H., where Church is working for Equitable Life- Dick I.ivington is working as a plant engineer for Dupont in Buffalo. Marty Borofski is another married man in Buffalo, Dick. Jim Kerley is out of the Navy but little else is known of him at this point. Same with VicSchermerhorn, too, who was last heard of with the Army Quartermaster on Saipan. BobEhinger was back in Hanover several weekends ago with a discharge from the Navy coming up in June. Somebody told me Bob intends to play professional basketball, but that little surprising bit of news comes from too vague a source! Bob Pelren is the proud father of twin girls and is now working for Paine and Weber, stock broker firm in Boston. Wish I could be more definite on some of you fellows.
Dave Whittemore dropped in the other day after a long absence from Hanover. Dave served with the Signal Corps in England, having just gotten back from there last February. He is living at home in Maplewood, but will be back at Hanover for the summer semester. Back to Tuck at the same time will be WaltHowe, now somewhere between Florida and Arkansas on a trip. John Walton and his wife, Frances, are living in Bridgeport; he was discharged from the Navy around December and is now working for General Electric. Ted Hopper is a chemist with the U. S. Industrial Chemical Cos. in Newark. JohnnyMilburn, who went to Colorado College his junior year, is interning in Philadelphia. I didn't know this, but all the time Hex Harrigan was in Hanover this winter he was working on his latest (or his first) book .... don't know the title, but the story deals with a couple of ex-gunners attempting to solve some of the many postwar problems .... on sale at your nearest bookstore—the best of luck, Hex. Dacy Stevens is out of the Marine Corps with plans of starting his own band. Bill Way thaler, with headquarters at the Dartmouth Club in New York, is working for the Home Life Insurance Cos. Bob Williams is out of the Navy with plans indefinite. Bill Jones is working for General Electric in Schenectady. Bob Pinto is back from the Pacific and out of the Army and is living in New Rochelle. StanSkaug is coaching and teaching in either Michigan or Wisconsin. Ray Wolfe, recently discharged from the Navy, is looking around for something along the same line.
Only one marriage to announce for this month .... that of Patricia Burwell of New Haven to Jim Gilbert. Present at the wedding were Al Drake, Fred Worthen, Al Hardy and Walt Powers. Walt was best man.
Engagements are limited to one, also Miss Audrey Irene Parmenter to GeorgeSchaefer.
On campus news is limited; everybody seems to be studying. Bob Brown was elected president of the Players, Don Kingsley finds an odd moment to write his column again for the Dartmouth. Bob Varney is station manager of DBS, Relly Rafjman has started the "Barbary Coast" again. Hank Hartman was elected to Green Key from the interdormitory council.
Two promotions (civilians and service) to report that of Gordon Bingham to major (inactive) and Stan Priddy as an associate of the Summers Agency of New England Mutual Life Insurance Cos.
And now, gentlemen, may X bid you a fond farewell as duty calls me elsewhere. Fred Stockwell has graciously consented to take over the job as secretary and I personally can't think of a better man. For many who are miles away the column serves as an only contact with the college they loved. Write Fred often; keep him posted on plans, reunions, news of other classmates. His job is not an easy one; give him your support.
JOHN L. HYDE.
