Combined Fee Raised
May 1948

AN INCREASE OF $5O in Dartmouth's annual combined fee, effective with the 1948 fall term, was announced April 21 by President Dickey. The combined fee, which will become $600 instead of the present $550, covers the usual tuition charge and all other general fees, including the health service, frequently treated as separate and additional charges at other Institutions.

President Dickey announced at the same time that the scope and amount of financial aid for Dartmouth undergraduates had been increased by the Board of Trustees so that the new combined fee would not make it more difficult for men of restricted means to attend the College.

"The adjustment in Dartmouth's combined fee," he stated, "is designed to meet in part the increased operating deficits of the College reflecting current costs generally and particularly the increases in faculty salaries put into effect within the last two years."

Notice was also given that dormitory room rents next year will be increased by $20 per occupant on about two-thirds of the accommodations and by $30 on most of the remaining third, with a few higher adjustments. The new schedule, also effective with the fall term, still provides a wide range of annual rentals from $130 to $380 per man, with three-quarters of the rooms within the range of $160 and $240.

In making the announcement about 1948-49 rentals, Halsey C. Edgerton '06, Treasurer of the College, stated: "The continued high costs of operating and maintaining dormitories have caused the Trustees of Dartmouth College to make increases in room rentals effective with the opening of the next college year. The cost of fuel oil is well over twice its prewar price; repairs cost more than twice prewar; janitor service, electricity, insurances and taxes are all up."

NEW COUNCIL MEMBER: Justin A. Stanley '33 of Chicago, who has been elected to represent District 111 on the Dartmouth Alumni Council. His first term of two years will begin on July 1, 1948.
