SID HAYWARD'S VISIT to Los Angeles climaxed a year of successful activities for the Southern California Association. Sid and the good wife, Barbara, arrived Friday morning, the 26th, and soon after they had registered at the Biltmore, were on their way to Twentieth Century Fox Studios where they toured the lot, inspected the picture-making facilities and watched sequences of two motion pictures in production.

The visitors were luncheon guests of Walter Wanger '15 and Jack Reeder '25 at Romanoff's. From there they traveled over the hills into the San Fernando Valley to the Disney Studios, where Jack Reeder explained the process of animation. Then back to Hollywood where Sid and Barbara were dinner guests of the officers of the Association and their wives. No tour of Hollywood could be complete without a dash of radio, so Jack Rourke '40 arranged for seats at the Dinah Shore show. At this point in the tour, the Haywards said, "when," and were taken back to their hotel in order to recuperate for a jaunt to San Diego on Saturday.

On this trip, Dick Hood '30 and Bill Adams '34 did the honors, driving our guests along the beautiful Pacific coast highway. I'm sure Sid Hayward's visit to San Diego will be fully covered by Vance Dickerman '31, in his report of their meeting, so I will not go into that detail.

On Easter Sunday, Sid and Barbara were on their own, visiting relatives and attending religious services. At church in Los Angeles, the Hanoverian presence was felt, in that they met Warner Wilson '42, recently arrived from Cincinnati, and they were ushered to their seats with all the dignity of the occasion by Walter Douglas '31.

Monday was devoted to a luncheon of the Hopkins Center Committee, where Sid brought the local boys up-to-date on the progress of the fund raising campaign. Monday evening rang a bell for the annual dinner of the Southern California Association. The event was unusual in character in that the alumni were the invited guests of the Acme Brewery, at their beautiful Sequoia Lodge. One hundred and twenty men responded to the lure of Sid and Bock beer. The program was emcee'd by President Dick Fi'ood '30. Sid reviewed the present position of the College. His refreshing description of Hanover and its problems was interesting news to his audience as was evidenced by the ringing applause which greeted his words. Murray Hawkins '19 discussed the local problems of the Freshman Committee; Eck Hiestand '10 gave a progress report of the Employment Committee, and Ken Lieber '36, our treasurer, announced there was a credit balance in the coffers—much to the amazement of all.

Dick Hood introduced the alumni who had come into the community recently, namely: Henry Thrall '06, (just visiting), L. A. Odlin '11, Allen Bunker '36, L. W. McChesney '38, Harold Fuller '43, John Cowart '43, Charles Bodley '46, Vincent Burke '47, Robert Stewart 48.

John Lyman '28, head of the Nominating Committee, in a manner which vied with the humor of Bob Hope and the aplomb of Robert Benchley, gave his report. The following officers were nominated and elected: President, John Reeder '25; Vice-Presidents, Jack Rourke '40, Bob Guggenheim '33, Dick Rogers '29; Secretary, Leon I. Rothschild '24; Treasurer, Bill Adams '34; and Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Fred Fuld '40.

John paid tribute to Dick Hood, for the fine manner in which he led the Association the past year, calling attention to the fact that Dick, in his capacity as head of the local FBI, devotes much of his energy to chasing criminals all over the country, but always found sufficient time for Dartmouth activities.

Will Hays '31, official photographer, took the picture reproduced with this report.

The meeting ended on a high note with a group picture and a few final rounds of Bock beer.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PLAYS HOST TO SID HAYWARD: The Annual Dinner of the Southern California Dartmouth Alumni Association was given March 29 at the Sequoia Lodge with the aid of the Acme Brewing Cos. Sid Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, was the main speaker.
