IN this month's issue the ALUMNI MAGAZINE continues the tradition of devoting one of its spring numbers to undergraduate affairs and of inviting talented members of the student body to contribute the major contents.
Throughout the year the MAGAZINE has given considerable space to the Great Issues Course, as the most significant educational venture at Dartmouth today, and perhaps on any campus. This month's lead article, ASenior's Verdict (Page 13), is an analysis of the first year of Great Issues from the point of view of a senior in the course. The author, Philip E. Booth '47 of Hanover, is the son of Prof. Edmund H. Booth '18.
Ten reproductions of undergraduate art will be found on Pages 16 and 17, and some examples of student poetry on Page 23. Student photography has been used as much as possible to illustrate this Undergraduate Issue, notable examples being the cover picture, credited below, and the collection of portrait photographs of the six Dartmouth professors who retire this month. The latter, on Pages 22 and 23, are the work of Harrison Ewing Jr. '49 and W. S. Stone '50.
Another main article, beginning on Page 18, is Expedition to Hatteras by John A. Gustafson '48. It describes the spring-vacation trip made to the Outer Banks of North Carolina by a student party representing the new Dartmouth Ecological Society. Other scientific activities on the campus are reported on Page 15 by Aaron Rausen '51 of the Dartmouth Undergraduate Scientific Society.
The Cover The cover picture for this month's undergraduate issue is the work of one of the top student photographers at Dartmouth—Robert W. Bull '45 of Melrose, Mass., son of Albert S. Bull '15. The student father demonstrating the Old Pine tradition to son Dicky, 2, is C. Leslie Jordan Jr. '45 of West Roxbury, Mass., a senior.
