Best Club Secretary
July 1948

This year's recipient of the Alumni Club Secretaries Award is Edward W. Atkinson '28, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Central Ohio. In making the award at the annual dinner of class and club officers in Hanover on May 15, Sidney C. Hayward, Secretary of the College, read the following citation:

In recent years, the blue ribbon achievements of Dartmouth club secretaries in the largest alumni centers have been recognized by this annual award. This year we turn to one of the less populous centers—Columbus, Ohio, where is typified the growing activity and strength of less numerous but equally interested and determined groups of Dartmouth men working for the good of the College. The very capable producer of excellent results in Columbus is Edward W. Atkinson '28. Whether in his frequent correspondence with the Alumni Records Office, his reports to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, or his attention to plans and programs of the Dartmouth Club of Columbus, this paragon of secretarial virtues stands high among the host of men who give their time, thought and energy so freely to Dartmouth.

The time was, and not long ago, when we thought of Dartmouth activity in Ohio in terms of Cleveland. Now there are other major Big Green centers in the state—Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Youngstown, and Toledo. These cities carry on a year-round Dartmouth program of frequent meetings, glee club concerts, speakers from the College including a Hanover Holiday program, interviewing a growing number of applicants, regional scholarship funds, meetings with prospective students and undergraduates and their fathers, and other activities. Throughout the country there are now about 100 organized alumni clubs and the list is expanded this year by several new groups. Columbus exemplifies the clear fact that Dartmouth's strength is spreading to every part of the country.

A copy of the Ticknor Print and our congratulations to the winner of the Alumni Club Secretaries Award this year, Edward W. Atkinson '28.
