Mr. Hopkins Honored
July 1948

PRESIDENT-EMERITUS Hopkins, now president of the National Life Insurance Company, last month received a highly pleasing recognition of his services as an educational leader from the New Hampshire State Board of Education. This was in the form of a citation awarded to him, in absentia, at the June commencement exercises at Plymouth Teachers College in Plymouth, N. H. The citation was presented by Dr. Ernest L. Silver '99, president-emeritus of the college, and it read in part:

As President of Dartmouth College during more than twenty-nine years he directed its development to the position of one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the country. In spite of his many responsibilities at the College, he repeatedly found time to respond to calls for public service to his native state.

As a member of Governor Bartlett's Advisory Committee on Public Education, he and his colleagues made a memorable report which formed the basis of the Educational Act of March 28, 1919, providing for an effective system of public education in the state.

As a scholar of wide interests and deep understanding of educational problems he has served with distinction on the boards of national foundations and participated in significant educational surveys.

It is with admiration and gratitude that the New Hampshire State Board of Education presents this award to Ernest Martin Hopkins, President-Emeritus of Dartmouth College, one of New Hampshire's first citizens.
