As a departure from the custom of holding its regular mid-year meeting in one of the metropolitan centers, the Dartmouth Alumni Council gathered in Hanover on January 21-22 with an excellent attendance of 25 of its 35 members. Once again the library of Sanborn House was the scene of serious discussion of Dartmouth developments and problems by College officers and representatives of the alumni body.
Roswell Magill '16 of New York, president of the Council, presided over the twoday meeting. The opening-night session, following an informal reception and dinner at the Inn, was devoted to a full examination of current and future financial problems of the College. Halsey C. Edgerton '06, who retires as Treasurer in June, and President Dickey were the principal speakers.
Saturday morning was devoted largely to reports by chairmen of the Council's standing committees. Discussion ranged over such subjects as class activities, the Alumni Fund, class gifts, Dartmouth parents, athletics, the Hopkins Center, alumni placement, and admissions. The Alumni Fund objective for 1949 was announced as $375,000, the same as for the 1948 cam" paign. In considering class activities, it was recognized that some of the more recent alumni classes have organizational problems because of their tremendous size (1946 has nearly 900 members owing to the absorption of former Navy who returned to get civilian degrees). The Council promised its own backing and urged all possible assistance from the College in getting these classes operating in such a way as to realize their great potentialities.
It was voted to hold the annual June meeting of the Alumni Council in Hanover, June 16-17, just before the class reunion weekend.
