Sid Li ay ward. Secretary of the College, paid the club a visit on January 31, a day marked by sleet, rain and then a freeze which made the roads into Elmira almost impossible. It was a tribute to Sid that 15 of us managed to get together at the Mark Twain Hotel. Two men drove from Laceyville, a distance of 60 miles; another came from Troy, two from Waverly, and another from Watkins Glen. A carload of six started from Williamsport but had to turn back, and another car from Binghamton had the same luck. It was decided that because of our weather uncertainties, annual meetings in the winter were out.
The meeting was called to order and after the usual reports and business the president called on Dr. Harold E. B. Speight, Dean of Elmira College, erstwhile Dartmouth faculty member and honorary member of the class of 1928, to introduce our guest and speaker. Dean Speight highlighted Sid Hayward's career and paid tribute to the excellent work he has done under President Hopkins and President Dickey.
For the next three hours Mr. Hayward discussed briefly but thoroughly the Great Issues course, the "Chicago Tribune" case, the admissions problem, Dartmouth standards, administrative problems including operational deficits, scholarship aid, and alumni association relationships with the College and with each other. All during the discussion Sid was the target of many searching questions all of which he answered excellently with no attempt at parrying. All of us felt that the evening was a great success and we are exceedingly grateful to Sid for his stop in Elmira.
Members of the association present included Os Skinner '28, Al Stillman '20, Crary Myers '28, Paul Shanley '30, Dr. Harold E. B. Speight '28 H, John Dean '36, Dr. Joe Roberts '32, Ed Knapp '27, son Ted Knapp, Dr. Bob MacLaren '35 and Rip Lowman '43.
Others who had planned to be present but were laid low by sickness: Harry C. Romayne '07, Dr. Rolland C. Bates '24, Roscoe "Boss" Geller '12.
The annual meeting is scheduled for the first week in April.
