Student Fees Raised
May 1949

EFFECTIVE with the coming fall semester, Dartmouth's annual tuition fee of $600 will be augmented by an "added fee towards the cost of education" in the amount of $75, it was announced last month. This added fee, voted by the Board of Trustees, will be remitted for all men granted scholarship aid.

The tuition, plus the added fee, will continue to cover all charges to students at Dartmouth for instruction, facilities and the health service.

While taking action to raise Dartmouth's annual fee by $75, the Trustees also voted to increase the amount of financial aid to be extended to students requiring such assistance. This was done in keeping with previously established policy that increases in fees must not make it more difficult for men of restricted means to attend Dartmouth.

In adopting an "added fee towards the cost of education" Dartmouth has taken a new step based on the principle that those who can, should bear a larger portion of the cost to the College of their education. The official announcement of the added fee stated: "Increased and increasing operating expenses are such that the tuition and the added fee together will cover only slightly more than one-half of the cost to the College of each man's education at Dartmouth. The balance must be met mostly from endowment and current gifts, notably the Alumni Fund."

Among the Ivy League colleges, increases in student fees for the coming year have recently been announced by both Harvard and Princeton. Dartmouth's present combined fee of $600 went into effect last fall, following a $50 increase in the fee which, in Dartmouth's case, covers not only instruction but also all the facilities and services for which separate and additional charges are frequently made at other institutions.
