Alumni Award: George Barber Munroe '43
September 1992

During the past year the Alumni Council has presented the College's prestigious Alumni Award to six remarkably accomplished and dedicated alumni. Over the next few monthsyou will find their citations adapted in our pages.

We believe there's truth in the rumor that the latest Who s Who had to add a couple of pages to fit in George s curriculum vitae. What a record it is! He was the ultimate scholar-athlete:

undergraduate senior fellow, Green Key, Phi Beta Kappa, Rhodes Scholar, two degrees from Oxford, J.D. from Harvard; tennis player, basketball high-scorer, All-American, and he played with the Boston Celtics while working his way through law school.

After three years of navy service, including duty in the Pacific, and with law degree in hand, George served with the U.S.High Commissioner in Germany, and he was a justice at the Nuremberg trials. Then came law firms and time as general counsel in U.S. Courts. In 1958 he joined Phelps Dodge Corporation, the nation's leading copper producer, where he shone for the next 30-plus years: CEO in 1969 and chairman of the board in 1975.

Along the way, George has been a director or chairman of an endless list of business and civic organizations, including welfare agencies, an insurance company several artistic enterprises, a political science academy, and The New York Times company.

All these years, his service to Dartmouth has been unstinting. As a member or the Board of Trustees for 14 years, and chairman for his last four, he made many trips to Hanover from New York with his wife, Ellie Bunin, and often met with students and alumni. But his work for the College as Trustee was preceded by many years of effort as class agent, class president, and a memeber ot the class of '43 reunion giving and major gift committees. He has been a dedicated Alumni Councillor, a Thayer Overseer, a Hopkins Center/Hood Museum Overseer, and has worked diligendy on die Committee for die Arts the DCAC National Committee, and the President's Advisory Committee! Now he is on the Campaign Executive Committee.
