WITH total gifts of $414,916 exceeding its goal of $400,000, the 1950 Alumni Fund set a new record for number of contributors and achieved the second highest cash total in the Fund's history. Dartmouth men who gave to the 1950 Fund numbered 14,945, an increase of 426 over the high mark set last year. Gifts totaled $28,000 higher than in 1949 and came within $1,760 of matching the all-time record of the 1946 campaign.
Under the chairmanship of Charles J. Zimmerman '23, a volunteer group of some 900 class agents and their assistants conducted the campaign. As in years past, the Alumni Fund covered what otherwise would have been a deficit in the College's financial operations.
The 29 classes which equalled or exceeded their cash objectives were led by 1892 under Class Agent William F. Geiger, with a record of 836 per cent. Honors for the largest dollar total went to 1923, which turned in $16,005 under the leadership of Leon H. Young; while 1946, with 540 contributors responding to Class Agent Robert Y. Kimball's all-out effort, led other classes in the number of men participating.
With the double objective of increasing participation and dollars, stated at the start o£ the campaign by George H. Colton '35, executive secretary of the Fund, the 1950 drive proved outstandingly successful on both counts. Forty-nine classes showed increases in dollar gifts. The total of contributors, representing 65 per cent of all living Dartmouth alumni, is a participation record without parallel among the college alumni funds of the country.
Of the records set by individual classes, seven established new highs in both the number of contributors and total dollars. These were the Class of 1910 under Andrew J. Scarlett; 1922 under Stanley P. Miner; 1923 under Leon H. Young; 1935 under Robert W. Naramore; 1937 under Alan W. Bryant; 1947 under Edward P. Scully; and 1949 under John Stockwell.
